I don't necessarily have an issue with non-violent prisoners being used for menial labor. As a matter of fact, that "few cents an hour" they earn should be given to the system and go toward the overall cost of their incarceration.

 

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

 

As far as NOT releasing marjuana offenses in states that have NOW legalized it: it was a crime when they broke it. Suck it up.

 

Def agree that there should be adequate rehabilitation programs.And maybe these types of non-violent crimes don't need to go to jail at all; maybe a required stint a manufacturing plant somewhere where they can learn a trade, make some money, pay off their debt to society in a minimal security location, repent before being released back into the wild.

 

Obviously there needs to be repercussions, but maybe we need to change their outlook on the crimes. (One and done. Min Security IS your second chance. If you are busted again, it's off to the slammer.)
