Dictionaries always LAG common use definitions by years and years before they're updated. The definition of 'email' wasn't added to the dictionaries until years and years later. It therefore makes logical sense that a dictionary in 1950 would include definitions that have been in common use for a lot longer than the less than 10 in this instance.
