There were Jews around Jerusalem around 33 ad. We don't know what happened to them. They're not the same people as the Khazar Jews.
If this story was true, I would guess that the Sephartic Jews were the ones in Jerusalem ini 33 ad, and the Ashkenazi Jews were the Khazarians who converted to Judaism in 800 ad.
