the commonest story is that some tribe or country or Ghengis Khan or whatever conquered Khazaria, and asked the locals to pick a new religion, and the Khazarians picked Jewish.

could be
todays Jews came from Khazaria. Not all but most.
The Jews that were there around Israel 2000 years ago, they were there then and then who knows?
Might have something to do with Sephartic and Azkenazi Jews.
Anyway, I was telling the basic story of the Khazar Jews. The Khazar Jews, supposedly were conquered, and made to choose a religion, and they chose Jewish. This happened around 800 ad.
There were Jews around Jerusalem around 33 ad. We don't know what happened to them. They're not the same people as the Khazar Jews.
If this story was true, I would guess that the Sephartic Jews were the ones in Jerusalem ini 33 ad, and the Ashkenazi Jews were the Khazarians who converted to Judaism in 800 ad.
Khazaria is next to Russia and the Russians got tired of the Jew tricks?
