Space Force seizes $1.2 million worth of cocaine from shores of Cape Canaveral base

A Department of Homeland Security investigation is underway after some 65 pounds of cocaine washed ashore on Cape Canaveral Space Force Station last month, the local wing said Friday.

A wildlife manager was conducting sea turtle nesting surveys on May 19 when she found small, tightly wrapped packages dotting the shore, Space Launch Delta 45 said in a Friday release. She immediately notified the 45th Security Forces Squadron.

"While I was waiting for them to arrive, I drove a little further and noticed another package, and then another," Angy Chambers, of the 45th Civil Engineer Squadron, said. "I called SFS back and suggested they bring their UTV, or utility terrain vehicle, as I counted at least 18 packages."

All in all, 24 packages weighing nearly 30 kilograms – roughly 65 pounds – were recovered from the beach. A Brevard County Sheriff's Office narcotics agent performed a field test and confirmed all were filled with cocaine.

The sheriff's office said the drugs have an estimated value of about $1.2 million.

Since the discovery in mid-May, the drugs were transported to a secure location and turned over to the DHS' Homeland Security Investigations. Agents have since examined the packages and drugs for unique identifiers, investigated the recovery scene, and conducted further tests.

David Castro, an HSI special agent, said maritime drug traffickers often transport bales of the cocaine that include 25 "bricks" each. Bales damaged or destroyed during transport can result in the individual bricks washing ashore.

Homeland Security's investigation into the origins of the drugs is still underway.

"We take pride in protecting our base and the surrounding community," 45th Space Forces Squadron Flight Sergeant Joseph Parker said in the release. "There is also a higher level of job satisfaction knowing that these drugs will not make it into our community."

Obama endorses Trudeau in the Canadian election

Barack Obama endorsed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday in the Canadian election, calling him an effective leader in a rare endorsement of a Canadian candidate by a former American president.

It is the second time Obama has done it. Obama also urged Canadians to re-elect the Liberal leader in Canada’s last election in 2019.

Obama tweeted Thursday that he was proud to work with Trudeau and described him as an effective leader who has strong democratic values.

Trudeau is in a tough re-election fight with his Conservative rival ahead of Monday’s parliamentary elections. Obama’s endorsement helped Trudeau with progressives in 2019.

Obama also endorsed Emmanuel Macron for president in France’s 2017 election, and he warned British voters against leaving the European Union.

Trudeau formed a close relationship with Obama when he was president.

“Thanks for your support, @BarackObama,” Trudeau tweeted. “Progress is on the ballot — and we’re going to keep fighting for it.”

The former president has long been popular with many Canadians.

“This is welcomed by Trudeau and Co. but not a surprise,” said Nelson Wiseman, a political science professor at the University of Toronto “Will Obama’s endorsement make a difference? Not many voters are still undecided so the material impact of Obama’s endorsement is minimal in my opinion. I think it is more symbolic of Liberal affinity with the Democrats which has been the case since JFK in the 1960s.”

Daniel Béland, a political science professor at McGill University, said it can only help Trudeau with progressive voters.

“Obama remains very popular in Canada and, although it’s unlikely to alter the race, this is something positive for the Liberals,” Béland said.

Voyage into Silence: Interview with Philip Gröning

The director of Into Great Silence discusses life at the Grande Chartreuse monastery, the presence of God in the world, and his award-winning film

In 1984, filmmaker Philip Gröning had an idea for a film. He took his proposal to the prior of the Grande Chartreuse monastery, the head monastery of the Carthusian order, high in the French Alps between Grenoble and Chambéry. Gröning wanted to shoot a documentary inside the Grande Chartreuse — not an ordinary documentary, concerned with the transmission of information, but a spiritual voyage into the inner meaning and experience of monastic life.

Cannabidiol Inhibits SARS-CoV-2 Replication and Promotes the Host Innate Immune Response

Cannabidiol from the cannabis plant has potential to prevent and inhibit SARS-CoV-2 infection

CBD and its metabolite, 7-OH-CBD, but not congeneric cannabinoids, potently block SARS-CoV-2 replication in lung epithelial cells. CBD acts after cellular infection, inhibiting viral gene expression and reversing many effects of SARS-CoV-2 on host gene transcription. CBD induces interferon expression and up-regulates its antiviral signaling pathway. A cohort of human patients previously taking CBD had significantly lower SARSCoV-2 infection incidence of up to an order of magnitude relative to matched pairs or the general population.

UPDATE 5-Attorney who advised Clinton campaign indicted in U.S. Trump-Russia probe

A cybersecurity attorney known for his work advising Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign was indicted on Thursday for lying to the FBI, as part of U.S. Special Counsel John Durham’s probe into the origins of the FBI investigation of ties between Russia and former President Donald Trump’s campaign.

Michael Sussmann, a former partner with Perkins Coie who also represented the Democratic National Committee and Clinton’s campaign in connection with Russia’s hack of the organization, is accused of making false statements during a Sept. 19, 2016, meeting with former FBI General Counsel James Baker.

It marks the second criminal case Durham has filed since former Attorney General William Barr tapped him in 2019 to investigate U.S. officials who probed the Trump-Russia contacts. Trump, a Republican, portrayed the 2016 FBI investigation as part of a witch hunt.

President Joe Biden’s administration has allowed Durham to continue his work as special counsel.

The indictment accuses Sussmann of falsely telling Baker he did not represent any client when he met him to give the FBI white papers and other data files containing evidence of questionable cyber links between the Trump Organization and a Russian-based bank.

The indictment alleges that Sussmann turned over that information not as a “good citizen” but as an attorney representing a U.S. technology executive, an internet company and Clinton’s presidential campaign.

Sussmann “will fight this baseless and politically-inspired prosecution,” his attorneys, Sean Berkowitz and Michael Bosworth, said in a statement.

Sussmann set up the meeting on behalf of a cyber-expert client, the statement said. “Mr. Sussmann met with Mr. Baker because he and his client believed that the information raised national security concerns,” it said.

“At its core, the Special Counsel is bringing a false statement charge based on an oral statement allegedly made five years ago to a single witness that is unrecorded and unobserved by anyone else,” the attorneys said.

Sussmann, who had been on leave from Perkins Coie, resigned from the firm on Thursday “in order to focus on his legal defense,” a spokesperson for the firm said in a statement.

The indictment says the technology executive client who helped assemble the data Sussmann presented to the FBI had “exploited his access to non-public data at multiple Internet companies to conduct opposition research concerning Trump.”

The FBI investigated, but ultimately concluded there was insufficient evidence of a “secret communications channel” between the Trump organization and the bank, which has been identified in news reports as Alfa Bank.

The bank was not named in the indictment.

The New York Times later reported on the FBI’s investigation into the Alfa Bank-Trump connection in October 2016 - a probe that the indictment says was sparked following Sussmann’s September 2016 meeting with Baker.

The indictment alleges that some other materials Sussmann handed over to the FBI included a paper prepared by an investigative firm.

The indictment does not identify the firm, but a source familiar with the events told Reuters it is Fusion GPS, the Washington-based firm that hired former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele to conduct opposition research on Trump on behalf of the Clinton campaign.

Steele went on to produce a contentious 35-page “dossier” purporting to outline Trump links and dealings with Russia and Russians.

A spokesman for Fusion GPS declined to comment, as did Steele. Neither has been accused of wrongdoing.

https://outline.com/aWZ6Vf

Apple and Google bow to pressure in Russia to remove Kremlin critic’s tactical voting app

Apple and Google have removed a tactical voting app created by the organization of jailed Kremlin critic, Alexei Navalny, from their respective mobile app stores in Russia.

Earlier this week Reuters reported that the Russian state had been amping up the pressure on foreign tech giants ahead of federal elections — appropriating the language of “election interference” to push US companies to censor the high profile political opponent to president Putin.

On Twitter today, a key Navalny ally, Ivan Zhdanov, tweeted that his organization is considering suing Apple and Google over removal of the apps — dubbing the act of censorship a “huge mistake”.

Zhdanov has also published what he says is Apple’s response to Team Navalny — in which the tech giant cites the Kremlin’s classification of a number of pro-Navalny organizations as “extremist” groups to justify its removal of the software.

Apple and Google routinely say they comply with ‘all local laws’ in the countries where they operate.

However in Russia that stance means they have become complicit in acts of political censorship.

“We note that the Prosecutor’s Office of the Russian Federation and the Prosecutor’s Office of the City of Moscow have also determined that the app violates the legislation of the Russian Federation by enabling interference in elections,” Apple writes in the notification of takedown it sent to the developer of the tactical voting app.

“While your app has been removed from the Russia App Store, it is still available in the App Stores for the other territories you selected in App Store Connect,” Apple adds.

Apple and Google have been contacted for comment on the removal of Navalny’s app.

Also via Twitter, Zhdanov urged supporters to focus on the tactical voting mission — tweeting a link to a video hosted on Google-owned YouTube which contains recommendations to Russians on how to cast an anti-Putin vote in the parliamentary elections taking place today until Sunday.

Navalny’s supporters are hoping to mobilize voters across Russia to cast tactical ballots in a bid to unseat Putin by voting for whatever candidate has the best chance of defeating the ruling United Russia party.

Their tactical voting strategy has faced some criticism — given that many of the suggested alternatives are, at best, only very weakly opposed to Putin’s regime.

However Navalny’s supporters would surely point out they are having to operate within a flawed system.

After Apple and Google initially refused to remove Navalny’s ‘Smart Voting’ app, last month, the Russian state has been attempting to block access to his organization’s website.

It has even reportedly targeted Google docs — which supporters of Navalny have also been using to organize tactical voting efforts.

Earlier this month Reuters reported that Russia’s communications regulator, Roskomnadzor, had threatened Apple and Google with fines if they did not remove the Smart Voting app — warning that failure to comply could be interpreted as election meddling.

Russian press has also reported that Apple and Google were summoned to a meeting at the Federation Council on the eve of the election — as Putin’s regime sought to force them to do his anti-democratic bidding.

According to a report by Kommersant, the tech giants were warned the Russian Federation was preparing to tighten regulations on their businesses — and told to “come to their senses”, facing another warning that they were at a “red line”.

The last ditch effort to force the platforms to remove Navalny’s app did then pay off.

In recent weeks, Roskomnadzor has also been targeting VPN apps in the country for removal — making it hard for Russians to circumvent the local ban on Navalny’s app by accessing the software through the stores of other countries.

Local search giant, Yandex, has also reportedly been ordered not to display search results for the Smart Voting app.

Earlier this year, Putin’s regime also targeted Twitter — throttling the service for failing to remove content it wanted banned, although Roskomnadzor claimed the action was related to non-political content such as minors committing suicide, child sexual exploitation and drug use.

Four detained after threat to German synagogue on Yom Kippur

Investigators in western Germany say they have not discovered any bomb components during searches in connection with a suspected planned attack on the synagogue in Hagen.

Four suspects were detained after what authorities described as an extremist threat to attack a synagogue in the western city of Hagen.

Electronic devices such as mobile phones and storage media have been seized and must now be evaluated, a spokesperson for the Dusseldorf public prosecutor's office said on Thursday.

A 16-year-old boy with a Syrian passport was among those initially arrested. Authorities are investigating allegations of preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state.

It is still unclear whether the 16-year-old suspect will be formally arrested. He is still being questioned by detectives. The three other people who were detained are his father and brothers. They were not arrested as suspects, but under police law, the spokesperson said. They were also to be questioned.

State Interior Minister Herbert Reul talked about evidence of "a Islamist-motivated threat."

Reul said earlier that "there was the risk of an attack on the synagogue in Hagen "which was "likely prevented" by police.

The apparent threat on Wednesday evening came on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year for Jews, and led to the cordoning off of the areas around the synagogue and the cancellation of services there.

Searches for more evidence, including at the main suspect's residence, were under way. Terrorism authorities are also involved in the investigation, prosecutors in Dusseldorf said.

The state premier of North Rhine Westphalia and candidate for chancellor in elections later this month, Armin Laschet, said that anyone planning a terrorist attack should be expelled from Germany.

"Whoever wants to integrate here, should integrate, should learn German, get a job - they can stay. But anyone who is planning a terrorist attack must be expelled from the country," he said during a campaign event in Lower Saxony.

"We are now uncovering how serious this attack was," Laschet said, linking the incident with an anti-Semitic attack on a synagogue in Halle in the state of Saxony-Anhalt in 2019. All extremists should be fought against, he said.

One of his rivals for the chancellorship, SPD candidate Olaf Scholz, wrote on Twitter: "It hurts that Jews in Hagen are exposed to such a threatening situation and cannot celebrate Yom Kippur together. It is our duty to do everything to protect them and to intervene immediately in case of danger."

Josef Schuster, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, thanked the police, among others.

"We thank the security authorities who apparently prevented an attack on the synagogue in Hagen. The incident brings back bad memories of the attack in Halle on Yom Kippur two years ago," he said in a statement.

"The fact that our community was again so endangered on the holiest holiday leaves us deeply concerned and shows that the increase of security measures at many Jewish institutions was and is necessary," Schuster added.

The former president of the council, Charlotte Knobloch, said the alleged attempted attack shows once again "that Jewish life without fear is still not possible in Germany, despite all the good words." Without police protection, she said, it remains unthinkable.

Germany's Turkish-Islamic Union for Religious Affairs Ditib has condemned the alleged plans to attack a synagogue in Hagen.

"An attack on a synagogue is an attack on a place of worship, and thus an attack on the whole of society," Ditib's chairman, Kazim Turkmen, said in Cologne on Thursday.

He said that such an attack - whether threatened, planned or carried out - is always an act of violence that affects more than just members of the respective religious community.

"We want to convey our solidarity and sympathy to our Jewish brothers and sisters in faith," he said.

The large police operation in Hagen on Wednesday evening followed a tip-off from a foreign intelligence agency on suspicions that someone was planning to carry out an attack, security sources told dpa.

On Yom Kippur two years ago, an armed right-wing extremist in Halle tried to force his way into a synagogue there. When the door held, he shot dead two people nearby and injured two others as he fled.

The 28-year-old man who confessed to carrying out the Halle attack was convicted last year and given a life sentence by a German court.

During the trial, the accused expressed anti-Semitic and racist views and outlined an anti-feminist conspiracy theory.

New restrictions on prescribing ivermectin for COVID-19

Today, the TGA, acting on the advice of the Advisory Committee for Medicines Scheduling, has placed new restrictions on the prescribing of oral ivermectin. General practitioners are now only able to prescribe ivermectin for TGA-approved conditions (indications) - scabies and certain parasitic infections. Certain specialists including infectious disease physicians, dermatologists, gastroenterologists and hepatologists (liver disease specialists) will be permitted to prescribe ivermectin for other unapproved indications if they believe it is appropriate for a particular patient.

These changes have been introduced because of concerns with the prescribing of oral ivermectin for the claimed prevention or treatment of COVID-19. Ivermectin is not approved for use in COVID-19 in Australia or in other developed countries, and its use by the general public for COVID-19 is currently strongly discouraged by the National COVID Clinical Evidence Taskforce, the World Health Organisation and the US Food and Drug Administration.

Firstly, there are a number of significant public health risks associated with taking ivermectin in an attempt to prevent COVID-19 infection rather than getting vaccinated. Individuals who believe that they are protected from infection by taking ivermectin may choose not to get tested or to seek medical care if they experience symptoms. Doing so has the potential to spread the risk of COVID-19 infection throughout the community.

Secondly, the doses of ivermectin that are being advocated for use in unreliable social media posts and other sources for COVID-19 are significantly higher than those approved and found safe for scabies or parasite treatment. These higher doses can be associated with serious adverse effects, including severe nausea, vomiting, dizziness, neurological effects such as dizziness, seizures and coma.

Finally, there has been a 3-4-fold increased dispensing of ivermectin prescriptions in recent months, leading to national and local shortages for those who need the medicine for scabies and parasite infections. It is believed that this is due to recent prescribing and dispensing for unapproved uses, such as COVID-19. Such shortages can disproportionately impact vulnerable people, including those in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

There is only one TGA approved oral ivermectin product, Stromectol ivermectin 3mg tablet blister pack which is indicated for the treatment of river blindness (onchocerciasis), threadworm of the intestines (intestinal strongyloidiasis) and scabies.

All medical practitioners can continue to prescribe oral ivermectin for the approved indications. However, prescribing of oral ivermectin for indications that are not approved is now limited to certain specialists.

Internet Covert Operations Program

The Postal Inspection Service's Internet Covert Operations Program (iCOP) is a surveillance program that monitors social media, cryptocurrency transactions, and USPS internal systems to facilitate "the identification, disruption, and dismantling of individuals and organizations that use the mail or USPS online tools to facilitate black market Internet trade or other illegal activities". The initiative also claims to assess "threats to Postal Service employees and its infrastructure by monitoring publicly available open source information". It is one of seven functional groups falling under the Postal Inspection Service's wider cybercrime program.

In 2019, iCOP produced over 200 intelligence reports for dissemination among USPIS officers. iCOP intelligence products have led to the seizure of at least $300,000 in cryptocurrency assets.

In April 2021, a leaked bulletin labeled "law enforcement sensitive" was distributed through DHS fusion centers and detailed planned protests on March 20 for the World Wide Rally for Freedom and Democracy. Public exposure of this bulletin raised questions about whether the monitoring of protests and protestors fell under USPIS's area of law enforcement jurisdiction.

According to a 2021 USPIS presentation, obtained by Vice Media Motherboard the iCOP Analytics Team's mission is to, "identify and develop intelligence on targets operating on the clear and dark webs for all Inspection Service investigations. Analytics Team specializes in providing actionable intelligence through cryptocurrency tracking, open source intelligence and social media analysis, geospatial mapping and data visualization, and USPS backend and network data exploitation."

The sexual abuse and exploitation of children rob the victims of their childhood, irrevocably interfering with their emotional and psychological development. Ensuring that all children come of age without being disturbed by sexual trauma or exploitation is more than a criminal justice issue, it is a societal issue. Despite efforts to date, the threat of child sexual exploitation remains very real, whether it takes place in the home, on the street, over the Internet, or in a foreign land.

Because the sexual abuse and exploitation of children strikes at the very foundation of our society, it will take our entire society to combat this affront to the public welfare. Therefore, this National Strategy lays out a comprehensive response to protect the right of children to be free from sexual abuse and to protect society from the cost imposed by this crime.

In the broadest terms, the goal of this National Strategy is to prevent child sexual exploitation from occurring in the first place, in order to protect every child’s opportunity and right to have a childhood that is free from sexual abuse, trauma, and exploitation so that they can become the adults they were meant to be. This Strategy will accomplish that goal by efficiently leveraging assets across the federal government in a coordinated manner. All entities with a stake in the fight against child exploitation—from federal agencies and investigators and prosecutors, to social service providers, educators, medical professionals, academics, non-governmental organizations, and members of industry, as well as parents, caregivers, and the threatened children themselves—are called upon to do their part to prevent these crimes, care for the victims, and rehabilitate the offenders.

United Airlines says 90 percent of workers vaccinated after mandate; Southwest offers bonus pay

United Airlines, the first U.S. carrier to require its employees be vaccinated, said Thursday that nearly 90 percent of its workers have received coronavirus vaccines, while Southwest Airlines — which does not mandate the shots — announced new bonus pay to workers who show proof of vaccination.

United has set a deadline of Sept. 27 for employees to get their shots or lose their jobs. It’s the largest U.S. carrier to mandate the vaccine, as airlines have taken various approaches in recent weeks to boost the number of vaccinated employees within their ranks.

“You’ve heard us say this time and time again — the safety of our entire United family is our top priority,” Kate Gebo, United’s executive vice president for human resources, said in a memo to employees. “That’s why we are requiring vaccines for employees: getting vaccinated is the most important thing each of us can do to protect ourselves and protect each other from this deadly virus.”
