That particular monk was already dead when he was lit on fire. He was part of the program to drum up sympathy for the Vietcong by suggesting the South Vietnam government didn't allow religious freedom for Buddhists.
Meanwhile, in North Vietnam, 7 monks killed themselves this way to protest against communist rule (which did, in fact, limit Buddhists' freedom to worship), but you didn't hear a peep about that in the MSM.
