(bible/ANEfag) wanted to add some thoughts to the owl pic/pope Q post discussion. Originally saw the owl as simply a ref to evil, demonic, spiritual 'black hat' which is pretty obvious about pope and catholic church (not saying ANYTHING about catholic people individually so please put the chip back on your shoulder). Then an anon(s) dug into the [personal] guardian vein (unmarried pregnant female personal assistant who was found dead a couple years ago) and that makes a lot of sense. Especially when you consider that the owl is connected directly to a female spirit being.
While the owl is used as a generic symbol for evil/demonic is so many cultures, sec societies, etc. Biblically it is most specifically 'lilith' (night hag). Isaiah 34 is the only ref we find in our current OT, which is a description of the judgement of YHWH on edom that gets lost in translations…when we read in eng bibles we see a listing of animals/birds (which are so varied from trans to trans). The hebrw is not muddy at all and clear that this is a judgement picturing 'evil spirit beings'
Ok if you are still reading…in the KJV you find "screech owl" in Is 34:14, which is an attempted translation from the hebrw 'lilit' or Lilith (akkadian 'lilitu' & Sumerian 'lil'). Has etymology that ties to the ideas of darkness/night and wind/spirit/air/storm (you can see the 'owl' link linguistically). When you place the Lilith narrative (first Eve-rebellious against Adam-stealer of children-sexual predator-wanting children but cannot have-seducer whose sexuality is perverted-one who seeks to entrap/steal) it sent my mind in a lot of directions.
(sauce) Here is a link to free pdf of The Dictionary of Deities & Demons in the bible (a great reference to have). The Lilith entry can be found on pages 520-21.
