Pfizer says COVID-19 vaccine works in kids ages 5 to 11

Pfizer said Monday its COVID-19 vaccine works for children ages 5 to 11 and that it will seek U.S. authorization for this age group soon — a key step toward beginning vaccinations for youngsters.

The vaccine made by Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech already is available for anyone 12 and older. But with kids now back in school and the extra-contagious delta variant causing a huge jump in pediatric infections, many parents are anxiously awaiting vaccinations for their younger children.

For elementary school-aged kids, Pfizer tested a much lower dose — a third of the amount that’s in each shot given now. Yet after their second dose, children ages 5 to 11 developed coronavirus-fighting antibody levels just as strong as teenagers and young adults getting the regular-strength shots, Dr. Bill Gruber, a Pfizer senior vice president, told The Associated Press.

The kid dosage also proved safe, with similar or fewer temporary side effects — such as sore arms, fever or achiness — that teens experience, he said.

“I think we really hit the sweet spot,” said Gruber, who’s also a pediatrician.

J&J: Booster dose of its COVID shot prompts strong response

Johnson & Johnson released data showing that a booster dose to its one-shot coronavirus vaccine provides a strong immune response months after people receive a first dose.

J&J said in statement Tuesday that it ran two early studies in people previously given its vaccine and found that a second dose produced an increased antibody response in adults from age 18 to 55. The study’s results haven’t yet been peer-reviewed.

“A booster dose of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine further increases antibody responses among study participants who had previously received our vaccine,” said Dr. Mathai Mammen, global head of research and development at J&J.

The company is in talks with regulators including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the European Medicines Agency and others regarding using booster doses of its vaccine.

Federal officer arrested at Capitol rally won’t be charged

A federal law enforcement officer was arrested carrying a gun at Saturday’s rally at the U.S. Capitol billed to support the suspects charged in January’s insurrection but will not be prosecuted.

The 27-year-old New Jersey man is an officer with U.S. Customs and Border Protection. He was arrested by Capitol Police for illegally possessing a gun on the grounds of the Capitol after people in the crowd reported seeing him with a handgun and notified nearby officers.

His arrest and presence at the event were surprising because the rally was billed as an event to support those who have been charged in January’s riot. That riot left dozens of police officers beaten, bloodied and bruised as the crowd of pro-Trump rioters, some armed with pipes, bats and bear spray, charged into the Capitol, quickly overrunning the overwhelmed police force.

Pfizer results offer hope amid worsening pandemic for children

“These trial results provide a strong foundation for seeking authorization of our vaccine for children 5 to 11 years old, and we plan to submit them to the FDA and other regulators with urgency,” Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said in a statement, without providing a specific timeline.

Former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb noted that Pfizer’s announcement “came a little earlier than some were expecting” on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”

“Depending on how long the FDA takes to review the application – whether it’s a four-week review or a six-week review – you could have a vaccine available to children as early as probably by the end of October, perhaps it slips a little bit into November.”

President Biden’s chief medical adviser, Anthony Fauci, expressed optimism that the Pfizer vaccine eligibility will extend to children aged 5 to 11 next month, saying Monday on MSNBC that he “think there’s a really good chance it will be before Halloween.”

It’s not impossible to live under a lockdown during the coronavirus pandemic

Living under lockdown entails weeks of uncertainty, but it gets better, writes one reporter living in Beijing.

So you’re about to be shut in. You’ve stocked the fridge. You’re working from home. The kids are bouncing off the walls.

Now that much of the world has imposed some restriction on movement, I thought I would share some thoughts on questions from friends and family that may be useful. While reporting on the pandemic from Beijing for the past eight weeks, I’ve been living under a lockdown, too.

Steel yourself for weeks of uncertainty and stress of the unknown. But from those of us who have been coping with the threat of the coronavirus since January, please know this: It gets better.

Evangelical Lutheran church installs 1st transgender bishop

The Rev. Megan Rohrer will lead one of the church’s 65 synods, overseeing nearly 200 congregations in Northern California and northern Nevada.

SAN FRANCISCO — The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America installed its first openly transgender bishop in a service held in San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral on Saturday.

The Rev. Megan Rohrer will lead one of the church’s 65 synods, overseeing nearly 200 congregations in Northern California and northern Nevada.

“My call is … to be up to the same messy, loving things I was up to before,” Rohrer told worshippers. “But mostly, if you’ll let me, and I think you will, my hope is to love you and beyond that, to love what you love.”

Rohrer was elected in May to serve a six-year term as bishop of the Sierra Pacific Synod after its current bishop announced his retirement.

“I step into this role because a diverse community of Lutherans in Northern California and Nevada prayerfully and thoughtfully voted to do a historic thing,” Rohrer said in a statement. “My installation will celebrate all that is possible when we trust God to shepherd us forward.”

Climate change is widespread, rapid, and intensifying, and some trends are now irreversible, at least during the present time frame, according to the latest much-anticipated Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, released on Monday.

The evidence is irrefutable: greenhouse gas emissions are choking our planet & placing billions of people in danger.

Global heating is affecting every region on Earth, with many of the changes becoming irreversible.

We must act decisively now to avert a climate catastrophe.
