There is a book by Alex Kotlowitz called There Are No Children Here that was required reading for a class I had in college. The conditions of the Henry Horner Homes is the backdrop for his story while he follows a mom and her children for a few years. There is a foul odor that comes through the toilet in their apartment that they can never seem to get rid of, despite many attempts by the mother in the book to plug it up or clean it. Years later, they find out that in the flooded basement of this project were thousands of rotting appliances mixed in with trash and dead animals. The city purchased the appliances and never installed them in the apartments. There is talk in the book of abortions performed in apartments and babies bodies put into the toilets. I can't remember much else from this book, but there is more to dig on here for sure.
