Marc Paul Alain Dutroux is a Belgian convicted serial killer, rapist, and child molester.
Dutroux was convicted in 1989 for the abduction and rape of five young girls, with his then-wife Michelle Martin and other accomplices. He was released on parole after three years in prison.
In 1996, Dutroux was arrested on suspicion of having kidnapped, tortured and sexually abused six girls aged between 8 and 19, four of whom died. His widely publicized trial took place in 2004. Dutroux was convicted of all charges, along with the murder of a suspected former accomplice, and sentenced to life imprisonment. Dutroux's accomplices included Michelle Martin, Michel Lelièvre, Michel Nihoul, and Bernard Weinstein. Martin was convicted and sentenced as an accomplice to 30 years in prison, while Lelièvre was sentenced to 25 years. Nihoul, "a Brussels businessman, pub-owner and familiar face at sex parties", was initially tried as an accomplice to the kidnappings, but was acquitted of these charges due to insufficient evidence. He was instead convicted of involvement in a gang that participated in human and drug trafficking and was sentenced to five years in prison. Weinstein was never tried, as he was murdered by Dutroux.

Julie Lejeune and Melissa Russo, eight, were abducted as they played near their homes on the outskirts of Liege and starved to death in a tiny cell Dutroux built in the basement of his terraced house near Charleroi. Their emaciated bodies were found buried in his garden.
Yesterday he blamed his ex-wife for failing to feed them while he was serving a prison sentence for car theft.
Two older girls - Eefje Lam brecks, 19, and An Marchal, 17 - were kidnapped in Flanders and killed in 1996. They were buried alive and their corpses unearthed along with the body of Dutroux's associate, Bernard Weinstein. He denied murdering all three of them.
Dutroux, who has a reputation for being manipulative, spoke of his unloving parents and his regrets at not being a good father to his three children. He claimed there had been a cover-up during the investigation, blaming his co-defendant, the Brussels businessman Michel Nihoul, for masterminding the kidnappings. Nihoul has denied this.
Dutroux portrayed himself as a victim, a "puppet in a show trial" who had to be put away to "hide the truth" and serve the interests of "organised corruption".
Only 10% of the case had been examined, he said, asking why independent-minded policemen had been removed from the investigating team. He urged police to follow up clues he said would prove he was working for a network which kidnapped girls to be sold into prostitution.
But Judge Stephane Goux said this week he saw no grounds for reopening files. Dutroux also attacked psychiatric experts who testified that he was a psychopath and compared him to the Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann.
The 12 jurors will be sequestered in an army barracks during their deliberations, which are expected to produce a verdict next week.

Giuffre's attorney provided photos of Fed Ex receipts confirming the delivery of the lawsuit to the Duke of York's attorney, Andrew B. Brettler, of the law firm Lavely and Singer.
"Pursuant to the Court’s order, on September 17, 2021, Plaintiff’s counsel retrieved two executed Requests for Service Abroad of Judicial Documents from the Court. Plaintiff’s counsel then caused the Requests to be delivered to the designated Central Authority of the United Kingdom on the Court’s behalf by FedEx, along with two requests of the Complaint, Summons, and Civil Cover Sheet in this matter," a court document filed Monday by Virgina Giuffre's lawyer states in the filing.
The court papers state Giuffre's legal team sent the summons and complaint to Brettler at his Los Angeles office and also "emailed" the documents, per the court's order approving alternative service.
