Cleveland mayor’s grandson killed 3 days after arson charges filed in torching of car linked to 2019 homicide

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson’s grandson was shot to death late Sunday, three days after investigators made their first significant breakthrough in a 2019 fatal shooting that was linked to a car he once owned.

The death of Frank Q. Jackson, 24, came three days after arson charges were filed against a man who is accused of setting fire to a car seen speeding away after the 2019 fatal shooting of Antonio Parra. The car was registered to the mayor’s grandson, and Cleveland police officers went the mayor’s house that night in search of Frank Q. Jackson.

The car was later found torched behind an abandoned building on Cleveland’s East Side.

DNA recovered from a hat found outside the car was linked to James Greathouse, 29, of Cleveland, who has a history of convictions for violent crimes. Greathouse was charged with arson on Thursday, marking the first major step in the investigation in more than two years.

No one, including Greathouse, has been charged in connection with the Aug. 28, 2019 shooting death of Antonio Parra.

The charges were filed three days before Frank Q. Jackson was shot multiple times about 9:15 p.m. Sunday on Anita Kennedy Drive near Sidaway Avenue, in the Garden Valley housing projects. Cleveland police have not released a motive for his death, and no arrests have been made in the case.

Frank Q. Jackson became embroiled in the Parra case after a Volkswagen registered to him was seen speeding away after Parra was shot outside a barbershop in Cleveland’s Stockyards neighborhood.

Cleveland police officers went to the mayor’s home later that night. The mayor told officers his grandson would give a statement to investigators the next morning. It was one of several anomalies that sparked suspicion in the way police handled the early part of the investigation.

Frank Q. Jackson’s attorneys told investigators that he sold the car sometime prior to the shooting. His attorneys were giving a press conference when police found the Volkswagen torched behind an abandoned church and near a large decaying brick building on Holton Avenue near East 93rd Street.

Court records say investigators found a fisherman’s-style bucket hat near the torched car. The hat was sent to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s office for testing. Greathouse’s DNA was found on the hat, according to court records.
