U.S. Marshals Service Operation Nets More Than 190 Fugitives

Operation Clean Sweep results in the arrest of numerous dangerous criminals throughout NJ

Newark, NJ – The U.S. Marshals Service has conducted a high-impact fugitive apprehension initiative focusing on some of the most violent offenders throughout New Jersey. This enforcement initiative, called Operation “Clean Sweep,” resulted in the arrest of more than 190 fugitives, gang members, sex offenders and violent criminals in the District of New Jersey.

“By employing a strategically focused approach to policing, our state, county, local, and federal, partners were able to locate and apprehend some of the most dangerous fugitives in the state of New Jersey. By removing these violent offenders from the streets, the communities they preyed upon can immediately feel more secure.” said U.S. Marshal Juan Mattos Jr.

“Clean Sweep” was a month-long operation focusing special attention on areas within the state that were designated as priority counties such as Essex, Mercer, Camden, Atlantic, and Gloucester.

During Operation “Clean Sweep” the District of New Jersey and the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force used its multi-jurisdictional investigative authority and fugitive task force network to arrest over 72 gang members and others wanted on charges including 13 for homicide and 80 for weapons offenses. In addition, investigators seized 16 firearms, $5,259 in currency, and more than 1.475 kilograms of illegal narcotics.

Year to date the District of New Jersey and New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force have combined to arrest more than 97 individuals for homicide, 160 for sexual offenses, 23 for Failure to Register as Sex Offenders, and 223 for weapons offenses. A total of 18.879 kilograms of narcotics, $120,519 in cash, and 61 firearms have been recovered throughout the state.

“Many fugitives tend to re-commit violent crimes which increases danger to communities by making the neighborhoods where we live and work unsafe” said Mattos. “By collaborating with our state, county, local, and federal partners, and conducting enforcement endeavors like Operation Clean Sweep, law enforcement serves to disrupt these criminal activities. “

The concept behind interagency law enforcement operations such as Operation Clean Sweep evolved largely from regional and district task forces. Since the 1980s, the Marshals Service has combined their resources and expertise with local, state, and federal agencies to find and apprehend dangerous fugitives. Operation Clean Sweep continued this tradition.

In a memo sent to every Democratic congressional office, John Podesta, a former White House chief of staff and member of the Board of Directors at the Center for American Progress think tank, says the party "must unite and act together" to pass the president's domestic agenda — but at a size and price much smaller than many have in mind.

"The political reality is clear, given Democrats have no margin for error in the Senate and a limited margin in the House. We will not secure the full $3.5 trillion investment," he wrote. "It's time for Democrats to unite in finding the path forward."

Singling out the moderate Democrats who are more focused on moving the smaller infrastructure bill, Podesta said, "[T]o those Democrats who only favor the bipartisan infrastructure bill, know this: you are either getting both bills or neither –– and the prospect of neither is unconscionable. It would signal a complete and utter failure of our democratic duty, and a reckless abdication of our responsibility. It would define our generation's history and show that, when our time came, we failed, both for Americans now and in the years to come. Again, it's time for Democrats to unite, find an honorable compromise and a path forward."

His memo landed in congressional inboxes as the fate of President Biden's domestic agenda — and potentially the credit rating of the U.S. — hang in the balance. Democrats are feuding among themselves about the size and scope of the Biden "Build Back Better" agenda that is set to be squeezed into a massive budget bill and passed only with Democratic support. Meanwhile, the largest bipartisan infrastructure spending bill in nearly two decades awaits final passage in the House, where it's being held in reserve to coax moderate and liberal Democrats to agree on the larger budget plan.

He pointed out that the consequences of failing to pass the legislation would be devastating both economically for American families and for the climate — both issues addressed by the $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill.

And Podesta also reminded them that there would be political fallout: "Republicans will have ample ammunition to skewer their opponents, and Democrats will lose. Our majority, thin now, will be a thing of the past."

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi this week also advised her Democratic colleagues that they "must be prepared for adjustments" and that she had promised "that we would not have House members vote for a bill with a higher topline than would be passed by the Senate." She was hopeful that "will be at the $3.5 trillion number."

As the disagreements continue to spill out into the open, the president is set to hold three separate White House meetings Wednesday with Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer; then a midafternoon gathering with a collection of House and Senate moderates; followed by a late afternoon confab with House and Senate liberals.

Researchers detect malaria resistant to key drug in Africa

Scientists have found evidence of a resistant form of malaria in Uganda, a worrying sign that the top drug used against the parasitic disease could ultimately be rendered useless without more action to stop its spread.

Researchers in Uganda analyzed blood samples from patients treated with artemesinin, the primary medicine used for malaria in Africa in combination with other drugs. They found that by 2019, nearly 20% of the samples had genetic mutations suggesting the treatment was ineffective. Lab tests showed it took much longer for those patients to get rid of the parasites that cause malaria.

Drug-resistant forms of malaria were previously detected in Asia, and health officials have been nervously watching for any signs in Africa, which accounts for more than 90% of the world’s malaria cases. Some isolated drug-resistant strains of malaria have previously been seen in Rwanda.

Guantanamo has long included a DHS immigration holding facility, which has previously used to hold Haitian migrants.

WASHINGTON — As it scrambles to deal with the surge of Haitian migrants at the southern border, the Biden administration is seeking a private contractor to operate a migrant detention facility at the U.S. naval base at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, with a requirement that some of the guards speak Spanish and Haitian Creole, according to government records.

A little-known immigrant holding facility on the base has a capacity of 120 people, the records say, and it "will have an estimated daily population of 20 people," according to a solicitation for bids issued Friday by the Department of Homeland Security.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has a continuing need to contract for services to provide unarmed custody and security officers to provide guard/security services at the Migrant Operations Center (MOC) at the Naval Station Guantanamo Bay (NSGB), Cuba. Contractor support is required to assist the Department of State (DOS) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in meeting their responsibilities for the safety, security and care of protected and non-protected migrants at NSG under Executive Order 13276.

The facility has a capacity of 120 people and will have an estimated daily population of 20 people, however the service provider shall be responsible to maintain on site the necessary equipment to erect temporary housing facilities for populations that exceed 120 and up to 400 migrants in a surge event. This equipment includes tents and cots, and the contractor must be able to have these assembled and ready with little notice. In addition, the service provider must maintain a roster of at least 50 individuals who meet the minimum requirements of the unarmed custody officer job classification and have a viable contingency plan to deploy these individuals within 24 hours of notification. At least 10% of the augmented personnel must be fluent in Spanish and Haitian Creole. Air transportation to/from the facility is the sole responsibility of the service provider.

The service provider shall be responsible to maintain on site the necessary equipment to erect temporary housing facilities for populations that exceed 120 and up to 400 migrants in a surge event.

All prospective contractors shall provide a brief capabilities statement electronically to the Contracting Officer, Corey Soileau, at Corey.Soileau@ice.dhs.gov no later than the date and time specified in this announcement. A solicitation for this requirement will be posted to the Government Point of Entry (GPE) after review of responses to this request.
