U.S. Sanction Crypto Exchange over Ransomware Attacks
For the first time ever, U.S. authorities imposed sanctions against a virtual currency exchange for its role in facilitating financial transactions for ransomware actors, the Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), said in a statement Tuesday.

OFAC claims that SUEX OTC enabled transactions involving at least eight ransomware variants’ illegal proceeds, and that a study revealed that illicit actors were involved in more than 40% of the company’s known transaction history.
While the majority of virtual currency transactions are legal, “peer-to-peer exchangers, mixers, and exchanges” can be used for illegal purposes, such as the “facilitation of sanctions evasion, ransomware schemes, and other cybercrimes,” according to the statement.
Malicious actors can use virtual currency exchanges in some situations, but in the case of SUEX, as OFAC stated, the corporation enabled illegal activity for its own gain.
OFAC warned that ransomware attacks are “increasing in scale, sophistication, and frequency, victimizing governments, individuals, and private companies around the world.”
“In 2020, ransomware payments reached over US$400 million, more than four times their level in 2019,” read the statement. It further stated that the U.S. government estimates that these payments constitute only a portion of the economic damage caused by cyber-attacks, emphasizing the goals of those who aim to weaponize technology for personal gain.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) assisted OFAC in the case.

Maricopa County Supervisor Clink Hickman was on The Mike Broomhead Show today to discuss the Gateway Pundit’s reports with leaked audio recordings of Steve Chucri.
Steve Chucri has since resigned but we are still releasing the audio.
Chucri was busted saying that Clint Hickman lied to stonewall an audit because he “just didn’t have the guts”.
Hickman then went on the air and said he forgives Chucri and denied everything, but Hickman hasn’t heard everything yet and someone is lying.

Chucri issued a statement Tuesday night saying he was stepping down from his District 2 seat on the board that governs Arizona’s largest county effective Nov. 5 after serving for nine years.
The announcement came after conservative website Gateway Pundit released secret recordings of Chucri from a March 22 meeting with leaders from a group called We the People AZ Alliance as well as a Jan. 22 phone call in which he discussed the then-proposed audit of Maricopa County’s 2020 election.
“We’re friends, we’re colleagues, and, you know, politics is rough and tumble, and I think we’re trying to process that a little bit.”
“I’ve never been afraid of an audit,” Hickman said. “We performed audits through the election and we performed two audits with independent certified technicians looking at the things I thought we were all looking at in March.”
“I know Steve. I know Steve’s integrity and character, and I would assume that he’s hurting right now,” Hickman said.
“And I will not be seeking out Steve because I know that he’s going to eventually seek me out and we can have a talk about it.”
Hickman agreed with Chucri’s resignation letter reference to a toxic political environment, but he said that didn’t apply to interactions among the supervisors.
“I have seen this, but that is not true when it comes to my colleagues on the board,” Hickman said. “We might not see things eye to eye, but this board is known for coming together and taking votes, and sometimes they align with each other and sometimes they don’t.
“But we truly have great respect, up and down the line, for both the people that are on the board that are elected, our other electeds, as well as all of our workers in elections and anything in public service for our constituents.”
Despite what Chucri said in the audio, he’s stood firm with the other four supervisors in opposing the Cyber Ninjas-led audit authorized by Arizona Senate Republicans. The review started in April, and the results are expected to be released on Friday.
“The picture some individuals are trying to paint about a cover-up, scam and other nonsense about my colleagues and myself is simply false,” he said in his resignation letter. “There was no cover-up, the election was not stolen. Biden won.”
He also apologized and said, “My colleagues have every right to be both angry and disappointed with me.”
“Steve is a great friend of mine,” Hickman said. “I am going to forgive him, and I am going to forget this and always roll towards our friendship.”

JPMorgan Being Investigated By Brazilian Authorities Over Potential Oil Bribes
RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Brazilian authorities are investigating whether JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N) played a role in an alleged bribery and money laundering scheme that dated back to 2011 and involved state-run oil company Petrobras, according to documents reviewed by Reuters and two law enforcement sources.
So far, police have focused their attention on purchases of roughly 300,000 barrels of Petrobras fuel oil by JPMorgan in 2011 according to the court documents and sources, who requested anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.
The documents, which were seen by Reuters, include email messages among alleged co-conspirators, witness testimony and bank records. The authorities are working to determine if the alleged bribery continued in subsequent years, the sources added.
The court documents viewed by Reuters include witness testimony from a former Petrobras fuel trader named Rodrigo Berkowitz. In his plea bargain agreement with Brazilian authorities, he refers to two fuel cargoes that were sold to a JPMorgan unit.
The probe, which is in preliminary stages, is part of a larger investigation by Brazilian authorities who have been examining wrongdoing across the commodity trading industry for years. As one of the world's largest banks, JPMorgan would represent the biggest target yet in the investigation.
The country's federal police are working to determine if JPMorgan secured shipments of Petrobras fuel at artificially low prices by routing bribe payments to employees on Petrobras’ trading desk though a network of middlemen, according to the people and documents that relate to the investigation.
Brazil's federal police and JPMorgan declined to comment on the investigation. The attorney for Rodrigo Berkowitz did not respond to requests for comment. He has previously confirmed that his client is cooperating with U.S. and Brazilian authorities investigating the commodity trading industry.
Petrobras, formally known as Petroleo Brasileiro SA (PETR4.SA), said in an email it has "zero tolerance in relation to fraud and corruption." The company added that it has aided Brazilian authorities extensively with various corruption-related probes.
The world's largest commodity traders, including Switzerland’s Vitol, the world’s top independent oil trader, are also facing scrutiny globally after years of investigations into whether they offered bribes to win contracts in several countries in Latin America. Vitol admitted wrongdoing as part of a 2020 settlement with U.S. and Brazilian authorities and has said that is pleased the matter has been resolved.
No charges have been brought in the JPMorgan probe, and it remains unclear whether any will be.

A Melbourne man who had his head smashed into the ground by a police officer was was “calling for his mum” when he woke up, a witness says.
A Melbourne man who was flung head-first to the ground by a police officer who approached him from behind amid a high-intensity anti-protest operation was “calling for his mum” when he woke up from being unconscious, according to a “distressed” witness.
Shocking footage has emerged of an officer walking up behind the man standing in Flinders Street Station yesterday, before violently slamming him headfirst into the ground.
The video — which police say they are investigating — is being spread widely on social media and was filmed during widespread unrest in the city.
The victim appears to be standing in the station, calmly talking to several other police officers, when the officer approaches from behind.
The officer grabs the man by the shoulders and throws him to the ground in a swinging motion.
The man’s face can be seen bouncing off the ground as his headphones go flying.
