Suspected arsonist arrested in Shasta County as Fawn Fire burns

SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. —

A 30-year-old Palo Alto woman was arrested Wednesday night and is suspected of causing a wildfire in Shasta County in the area where the Fawn Fire has caused evacuations.

Cal Fire and other fire agencies responded to a vegetation fire near Fawndale Road north of Mountain Gate on Wednesday afternoon. Employees earlier in the day had reported seeing a woman trespassing on the property and acting irrationally, according to Cal Fire and Shasta County Fire.

As crews were battling the fire a woman, later identified as Alexandra Souverneva, walked out of the brush nearby and said she was dehydrated and needed medical treatment.

After she was evaluated and treated, Cal Fire interviewed her and came to believe she was responsible for starting the blaze.

The Shasta County District Attorney’s Office is recommending she be charged with “arson to wildland.”

The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office issued mandatory evacuation orders Thursday afternoon because of the Fawn Fire burning in the unincorporated Mountain Gate area north of the city of Redding at the far north end of the Central Valley.
