I am not sure of the context atm, but I recently heard of a type of human sacrifice in which a person was roasted inside a metal idol. The idol was heated in flames apparently and when the suffering victim was groaning and crying out from inside the idol the evil priests feigned that it was the idol making the noise.
Made me think of the phrase "in the belly of the beast".
