"A senior executive of Huawei Technologies who had been held in Canada for three years has left the country for China after striking a deal with the US authorities. The Chinese telecom giant's Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou was detained at Washington's request for violating sanctions against Iran in 2018. She was later indicted on charges including fraud. Meng was released on bail, but has been staying at home in Vancouver under strict surveillance. The US Justice Department said on Friday that charges, including fraud, would be dropped if she admitted to some wrongdoing. After Meng left for China on a chartered flight, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters that two Canadians who had been detained in China were released and heading home. The two were arrested in China shortly after Meng's arrest in 2018.
It is widely believed that the decision by the US authorities to make a deal reflects Canada's wishes, but Washington and Beijing are likely to remain at odds. The administration of US President Joe Biden regards Huawei as a security threat and is tightening regulations against the company."
