China releases detained Canadians Kovrig, Spavor after extradition against Meng Wanzhou dropped

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says China has released detained Canadians Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor after Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou and U.S. Justice Department officials reached a deal to resolve the criminal charges against her and a B.C. judge discharged the extradition matter.

Speaking during a press conference late Friday night, Trudeau said Kovrig and Spavor boarded a plane in China at about 7:30 p.m. EDT with Canada's Ambassador to China Dominic Barton. He said the plane has since left Chinese airspace and "they're on the way home."

"These two men have gone through an unbelievably difficult ordeal. For the past 1,000 days they have shown strife, perseverance, resilience, and grace – and we are all inspired by that," Trudeau said.

"I want to thank their families who've been there for them, supporting them in every way they could, and supporting in the work we've done to secure their release," he added.

Trudeau also thanked the "countless" Canadian diplomatic officials who have "tirelessly" worked over the past two and a half years to secure the release of Kovrig and Spavor, as well as the country's allies who "stood steadfast in solidarity with Canada."

"Finally, I want to thank Canadians who have kept them in our thoughts and remain determined in the core value that Canadians have of standing up for each other and looking out for each other," Trudeau said. "These two men have been through an unbelievably difficult situation, but it is inspiring, and it is good news for all of us that they are on their way home to their families."

The two Canadians have been in Chinese custody for 1,019 days on espionage charges that were largely viewed as a retaliatory response to Canada’s arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou on a U.S. warrant related to the company’s business dealings in Iran. However, China’s has consistently denied that the cases were in any way connected.

Both of the Canadians stood trial in China, and Spavor had been handed down an 11-year sentence, while Kovrig had yet to be sentenced before their release.

Rep. Bob Gibbs introduces articles of impeachment against Biden

Ohio Republican Rep. Bob Gibbs introduced articles of impeachment against President Joe Biden on Tuesday, citing his handling of the U.S.-Mexico border situation, attempt to expand the federal moratorium on evictions, and the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan.

Republican Reps. Andy Biggs of Arizona and Brian Babin and Randy Weber of Texas signed on as co-sponsors of the impeachment resolution.

“I take this seriously. I don't think it's haphazard. I'm not trying to get media attention for myself,” Gibbs told the Washington Examiner in an interview. “He’s done so much damage to this country in less than nine months, which is really scary.”

“He's not capable of being commander in chief, and that's obvious by the actions since Day One when he took the presidency back in January,” Gibbs said. “Maybe something like this makes the White House think twice before they do some of this nonsense."

Although the most recent Republican impeachment calls have centered on a chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan, during which the U.S.-backed government fell and the Taliban retook power, Gibbs’s resolution includes three articles of impeachment that cover two other issues.

“We actually started working before the Afghanistan debacle because I was so upset” about the border and eviction situations, Gibbs said.

“Obviously, it's not going to go anywhere with Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi,” Gibbs said, acknowledging the slim chances of impeachment while Democrats are in the majority. But “it shows that there are some Republicans that think that this president needs to be impeached, he needs to be removed from office one way or another," he added.

“At some point, they're gonna be held accountable for their actions, and this is kind of putting them on notice,” Gibbs said.

The first impeachment article in his resolution charges that Biden “violated his constitutional oath to faithfully execute the office of President” with his handling of migration on the U.S.-Mexico border. It cites his halting construction of the border wall, ending the policy that requires migrants seeking asylum to remain in Mexico, and releasing "thousands of migrants who entered the United States illegally without a date to appear in court for immigration," including migrants who tested positive for COVID-19.

“If that isn't violating his oath of office to protect American citizens, our safety, and our welfare, I don’t know what is,” Gibbs said.

Evergrande ‘Controlled Explosion’ May Level China’s Growth Model

As the world’s most indebted real estate company sinks closer to collapse, the optimistic take among global investors when it comes to China’s Evergrande Group is that this is a “controlled explosion” rather than a “Lehman moment.”

But didn’t Beijing itself light the fuse? The “red lines” on corporate debt the government issued last year all but guaranteed Evergrande’s demise. Still, the bulls say, financial authorities have had plenty of practice at this kind of demolition job. Earlier this year, they placed into bankruptcy administration the HNA Group, one of China’s most acquisitive conglomerates, and on Friday the company announced police had detained its chairman and chief executive.

HNA is one thing. When it comes to Evergrande, though, this explosion can’t be so easily contained. In fact, the developer’s troubles may eventually blow up China’s entire economic growth model.
