A flight from Boston to San Juan landed Wednesday evening with one passenger restrained to a chair with multiple seatbelt extenders after an insane mid-air altercation, according to an FBI affidavit obtained by The Daily Beast. The passenger, a man named Khalil El Dahr, had attempted to make a phone call near the end of the flight and “became angry about the call’s unsuccess.” Roughly 45 minutes before landing, he pulled himself out of his seat and rushed towards the cockpit, yelling in Spanish and Arabic that someone should shoot and kill him.

El Dahr grappled with the flight attendant who attempted to intercept him, punching and kicking him in the chest, and strangling him with the attendant’s tie. It took “six or seven” crew members to restrain the passenger with plastic zip-tie handcuffs, but El Dahr somehow managed to break out of them. Another pair was used, in addition to at least four seat belt extenders (and, according to testimony, the flight attendant’s tie). Law enforcement met the plane upon its arrival in San Juan.

Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio was an FBI informant

Extremist leader repeatedly worked undercover for investigators after his arrest in 2012, former prosecutor and court files reveal

Enrique Tarrio, the leader of the Proud Boys extremist group, has a past as an informer for federal and local law enforcement, repeatedly working undercover for investigators after he was arrested in 2012, according to a former prosecutor and a transcript of a 2014 federal court proceeding obtained by Reuters.

In the Miami hearing, a federal prosecutor, a Federal Bureau of Investigation agent and Tarrio’s own lawyer described his undercover work and said he had helped authorities prosecute more than a dozen people in various cases involving drugs, gambling and human smuggling.

Tarrio, in an interview with Reuters on Tuesday, denied working undercover or cooperating in cases against others. “I don’t know any of this,’” he said, when asked about the transcript. “I don’t recall any of this.”

Law enforcement officials and the court transcript contradict Tarrio’s denial. In a statement to Reuters, the former federal prosecutor in Tarrio’s case, Vanessa Singh Johannes, confirmed that “he cooperated with local and federal law enforcement, to aid in the prosecution of those running other, separate criminal enterprises, ranging from running marijuana grow houses in Miami to operating pharmaceutical fraud schemes”.

Tarrio, 36, is a high-profile figure who organizes and leads the rightwing Proud Boys in their confrontations with those they believe to be antifa, short for “anti-fascism”, an amorphous leftist movement. The Proud Boys were involved in the deadly insurrection at the Capitol on 6 January.

The records uncovered by Reuters are startling because they show that a leader of a far-right group now under intense scrutiny by law enforcement was previously an active collaborator with criminal investigators.

How fall of property giant Evergrande sent a shockwave through China

All eyes are on Xi Jinping as expectation grows that the government will have to intervene to protect small creditors

In May 2020, Chen (not his real name) decided to invest 300,000 yuan (£34,000) in property in the north-eastern Chinese city of Shenyang. “I thought the price was not too expensive and I had some extra money so I invested it,” he said. “I thought it was going to be all right because Evergrande is such a big name and enterprise.”

Chen was following in the footsteps of countless fellow Chinese, getting in on a booming property market that had turned big cities such as Beijing, Shenzhen and Shanghai into some of the world’s most expensive, amid the huge transfer of the population from rural to urban areas.

But in the 16 months since Chen bought his off-plan apartment, Evergrande – a Fortune Global 500 company – has become the country’s most indebted developer, with more than $300bn (£220bn) in liabilities, dozens of sprawling residential projects stalled and an estimated 1.5 million unfinished apartments that it needs to deliver to investors.

The potential collapse – the culmination of years of borrowing – has sent shockwaves through the finance and property sectors, and prompted concern that it could affect China’s entire financial system, even international markets. There are also concerns about how it will affect iron ore prices. On Thursday, the Fitch Ratings agency downgraded its forecast for China’s economic growth, saying the “main factor weighing on the outlook is the slowdown in the property sector”.

Two weeks ago Evergrande issued a public statement, admitting it was facing “unprecedented difficulties” and had hired restructuring consultants, but hit back at speculation of bankruptcy.

Wednesday appeared to bring some hope, as the company announced it had reached a deal to repay interest on a domestic bond due on Thursday. But it did not announce the payment of $83.5m due in interest to international bondholders on the same day. And as the silence continued into Friday, worries were compounded by reports that its electric vehicle unit had missed payments to suppliers and salaries to some staff.

“I don’t see any alternative for the company than going through some form of debt restructuring, which will involve significant debt rescheduling, potentially a debt-for-equity swap,” said Michel Löwy, chief executive of the global banking group SC Lowy.

>Les psychiatres concluent d’ailleurs à un « profil psychopathique » avec « sadisme sexuel sévère » et risques de récidive élevé.

The ironic thing is that Dutroux himself does not ask to be released. Recently examined by three psychiatric experts, he declared that he "does not want any form of release, but demands the reopening of his trial which, in his opinion, will inevitably lead to him being exonerated and brought out through the front door". In any case, his release is hardly conceivable, because he does not present any reintegration plan. Psychiatrists also conclude that there is a "psychopathic profile" with "severe sexual sadism" and high risk of recurrence.

Solar Superstorms: Planning for an Internet Apocalypse

Black swan events are hard-to-predict rare events that can signicantly alter the course of our lives. The Internet has played a key role in helping us deal with the coronavirus pandemic, a recent black swan event. However, Internet researchers and operators are mostly blind to another black swan event that poses a direct threat to Internet infrastructure. In this paper, we investigate the impact of solar superstorms that can potentially cause large-scale Internet outages covering the entire globe and lasting several months. We discuss the challenges posed by such activity and currently available mitigation techniques. Using real-world datasets, we analyze the robustness of the current Internet infrastructure and show that submarine cables are at greater risk of failure compared to land cables. Moreover, the US has a higher risk for disconnection compared to Asia. Finally, we lay out steps for improving the Internet’s resiliency.

Earlier on Friday, the Democratic controlled House of Representatives passed the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA). The 218-211 vote was almost entirely along party lines, except Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) voted against it. Not only did Democrats vote to pass such extreme pro-abortion legislation, they also denied the motion to recommit, which would have amended the bill to include protections for babies born alive after abortions.

Rep. Julia Letlow (R-LA), while speaking on the House floor, indicated “this amendment is simple, straightforward, and the right thing to do. It would ensure that newborn children that survive an abortion are given the same crucial life saving medical care that any other infant would receive.”
