Wiltshire in particular.
It is because of the immense chalk layer underground, it creates a natural electromagnetic insulation layer which allows their electromagnetism (or means of creating patterns) to more easily bounce off the ground and reflect back upwards.
The area they appear in has one of the largest thickest continuous chalk layers.
I'll try to find the vid of the light orbs creating a crop circle in real time, only video im aware of.
As far as trying to debunk crop circles, I was once a total skeptic until I started digging into it more. The human made ones are insanely crude compared to the real deal. And as far as following popular sci fi? Nah not true at all. Many crop circles haven't been decoded and only a few have followed an event. Most of what we see appears to be sacred geometry.
