The former Algerian Minister of Finance, Mohamed Loukal was placed under arrest warrant by the examining magistrate near the Abane-Ramdane street court in Algiers, for his alleged involvement in corruption cases.
Mohamed Loukal (71), who had also held the post of governor of the [Bank of Algeria], is being prosecuted for, in particular, “abuse of power” and “granting undue privileges during his tenure as director of the External Bank of Algeria. Algeria from 2001 to 2016, according to corroborating sources.

Algerian Finance Minister Mohamed Loukal was released after state TV said he was questioned Monday by a prosector on suspicion of "squandering" public funds.
The former central bank governor is the first government official to appear before prosecutors since mass protests erupted in February against [Abdelaziz Bouteflika]'s two-decade rule.
"Thieves, you looted the country!" – one of the slogans of the protest movement.
High-profile figures targeted in the past week include the North African country's richest man, [Issad Rebrab], who was reportedly detained on allegations of false customs declarations.

Algerian police on Monday arrested the country’s wealthiest man hours after detaining four other business tycoons from a powerful family with links to ousted president Abdelaziz Bouteflika, state television reported.
The five are being investigated for corruption and include Issad Rebrab, the CEO of Algeria’s biggest privately-owned conglomerate Cevital, according to the state broadcaster.
Forbes magazine lists Rebrab as Algeria’s richest man and the sixth-wealthiest in Africa, with a net worth of $3.38 billion in 2019.

The corruption trial of ousted Algerian president Abdelaziz Bouteflika’s younger brother, slated to begin this month, will be postponed for two weeks, local press reported Sunday, after the death of his brother earlier this month.
The younger brother was generally seen as the true power in Algeria after Abdelaziz Bouteflika suffered a debilitating stroke in 2013.
