Detroit City Council member Andre Spivey pleads guilty to bribery charges

Spivey faces up to 5 years in prison

According to court records, Spivey was serving as an elected member of the Detroit City Council when he accepted $35,900 from an undercover federal law enforcement officer and an informant for the FBI.

In eight separate incidents between February 2018 and February 2020, Spivey or a member of his staff (identified as Public Official A), accepted bribe payments amounting to thousands of dollars from the agent or the informant.

Spivey has served on the Detroit City Council since 2009.

FBI searches Detroit City Hall, 2 council members’ homes

FBI agents on Wednesday searched offices at Detroit City Hall and the homes of two City Council members, just a few weeks after another councilman was charged in an alleged bribery scheme.

Agents and state police were seen at the homes of Janeé Ayers and Scott Benson.

Last month, Detroit Councilman Andre Spivey was charged in federal court with conspiracy to commit bribery and accused of accepting $1,000 from an undercover law enforcement agent in October 2018.
