Sydney news: Deadline looms for health workers to get jab; deliveries impacted after FedEx mass walk off

Today is the deadline for NSW healthcare workers to have had at least one jab of a COVID-19 vaccine.
Under the public health orders, they will need to get the second jab by the end of November.
NSW Health said while the vast majority of healthcare workers have embraced vaccination, there are a very small minority who have indicated they don't want to be vaccinated.
Health Minister Brad Hazzard said they'll be stood down if they continued to refuse.
Deliveries impacted after FedEx walk off
Parcel deliveries across the country may be affected today due to a mass walk off of FedEx employees striking for better job security.
Up to 3,000 FedEx workers began a 24-hour strike at midnight after 97 per cent voted yes to a walk in a recent ballot of the company's Transport Workers Union (TWU).
The TWU said the delivery company in June reported revenues of $US84 billion and was pushing FedEx to enact a cap on outside hires.
The strike comes a week after 2,000 employees at Australia Post company, StarTrack, also walked off the job.

At least 30 killed, some beheaded, in Ecuador prison gang war
Dozens of people have been reported dead following an outbreak of gang warfare in an Ecuadorian prison. Several of the victims were brutally beheaded, and authorities are still recovering bodies.
Violence broke out on Tuesday at the Penitenciaria del Litoral prison in Guayaquil, Ecuador. By Wednesday, at least 30 people were reported dead and 52 injured, Bolivar Garzon, director of Ecuador’s prison system, told local media outside the facility.
Prisoners armed with guns, grenades, and melee weapons murdered each other with extreme brutality, and six victims were found beheaded. After a five-hour operation, police using ‘non-lethal weapons’ managed to retake control of the prison, national police commander Fausto Buenano told journalists.
Buenano said that his officers were attacked by armed prisoners, but did not say whether these officers killed or injured any prisoners. Video posted by the government of Guayas State showed a column of riot cops entering the prison, and six cooks being evacuated from the facility.
Though the violence has been subdued, some 10 corpses remain inside the prison and officers are working to remove them, Garzon added.
Rival gangs vying for control in the prison are believed to be responsible for the battle, with Ecuadorian officials blaming the ‘Los Lobos’ and ‘Los Choneros’ groups. These outfits are two of the numerous gangs that operate in Ecuador’s overcrowded and often lawless prison system, with many groups linked to the Mexican Sinaloa and Jalisco New Generation cartels.
Tuesday’s bloodbath in Guayaquil was not an isolated incident. Two equally violent prison battles have broken out already this year, with a wave of rioting across the country’s prisons killing 22 in July, and a similar series of concerted violence leaving at least 75 people dead in February. The clashes came after the assassination of a Los Choneros leader triggered a power struggle between the country’s prison gangs.

CDC issues urgent health advisory related to pregnancy and COVID-19
CDC Statement on Pregnancy Health Advisory
Today, CDC issued an urgent health advisory to increase COVID-19 vaccination among people who are pregnant, recently pregnant (including those who are lactating), who are trying to become pregnant now, or who might become pregnant in the future to prevent serious illness, deaths, and adverse pregnancy outcomes.
The CDC health advisory strongly recommends COVID-19 vaccination either before or during pregnancy because the benefits of vaccination for both pregnant persons and their fetus or infant outweigh known or potential risks. Additionally, the advisory calls on health departments and clinicians to educate pregnant people on the benefits of vaccination and the safety of recommended vaccines.
According to CDC data, only 31 percent of pregnant people have been vaccinated against COVID-19 and vaccination rates vary markedly by race and ethnicity. Vaccination coverage is highest among Asian people who are pregnant (45.7 percent), but lower among Hispanic or Latino pregnant people (25 percent), and lowest among Black pregnant people (15.6 percent).
Through September 27th, there were more than 125,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in pregnant people including more than 22,000 hospitalized and 161 deaths; of which, 22 deaths occurred in the month of August alone. Cases of COVID-19 in symptomatic, pregnant people have a two-fold risk of admission into intensive care and a 70 percent increased risk of death. Pregnant people with COVID-19 are at increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes that could include preterm birth, stillbirth, and admission into the ICU of a newborn also infected with COVID-19.

Twenty-one WHO workers sexually abused women and girls while tackling the Ebola outbreak in the Congo, with victims 'ambushed' in hospitals and forced to have abortions by their rapists.
The abuse was carried out by Congolese and international workers between 2018 and 2020 during the epidemic in which 2,000 people died.
An independent commission found that 21 of the 83 alleged perpetrators were employed by the WHO.
Some of the victims said they were plied with drink, while others said they were coerced into having sex by a doctor who promised them a job. The youngest was just 13 years old.
Several women fell pregnant because their attackers did not use contraception, and two victims said the men forced them to have abortions.
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called the report 'harrowing' reading and a 'dark day' for the UN health agency.
'I'm sorry for what was done to you by people who are employed by WHO to serve and protect you,' he said at a news conference on Tuesday. 'It is my top priority that the perpetrators are not excused, but held to account.'
The probe was prompted by an investigation last year by the Thomson Reuters Foundation and The New Humanitarian in which more than 50 women accused aid workers from the WHO and other charities of demanding sex in exchange for jobs between 2018-2020.
'This is the biggest finding of sexual abuse perpetrated during a single U.N. initiative in one area or one country during the time-bound period of a U.N. response effort,' said Paula Donovan, co-director of the Code Blue Campaign, which is campaigning to end sexual exploitation by U.N. peacekeepers.

Saudi Arabia & Iran may re-establish relations after series of discrete meetings – reports
Riyadh and Tehran may soon formally resume relations severed in 2016, one report said as officials from Saudi Arabia and Iran quietly met this week. The series of contacts is reportedly mediated by the Iraqi government.
Saudi and Iranian officials met in Baghdad this week, Axios reported on Wednesday, citing Iraqi sources. The meeting’s agenda was “dominated by efforts to repair the bilateral relationship and by regional issues concerning both sides,” according to the US outlet.
Journalist and researcher Elijah Magnier went a step further, tweeting that the two countries are preparing to reopen diplomatic missions.
Saudi Arabia broke off relations with Iran in January 2016, after protests in Tehran over the execution of Nimr al-Nimr, a dissident Shia cleric. Iranians are mainly Shia Muslims, while the Saudis follow the Wahhabi Sunni branch of Islam.
This week’s meeting was reportedly the fourth in a series that began in August, thanks to the efforts of Mustafa al-Kadhimi, the prime minister of Iraq. A personal friend of the Saudi crown prince Mohammed Bin Salman, al-Kadhimi apparently reached out to Tehran following the Iranian presidential election, and hosted a regional meeting in Baghdad that included Egypt, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates as well. Axios has blamed former US President Donald Trump – who took a hard line on Iran and openly sided with the Saudis – for the hardening of the conflict between Riyadh and Tehran that predated his election.
The regional meeting in Baghdad took place as the US was evacuating from Afghanistan, following the collapse of the US-backed government in Kabul to the Taliban.
President Joe Biden’s national security advisor Jake Sullivan visited Saudi Arabia on Monday for talks with the crown prince, officially about Yemen and the Saudi human rights situation – but “de-escalation of regional tensions with Iran” was also on the agenda, according to Axios.

Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott has defended protesters who stormed Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance to protest against COVID-19 vaccine mandates in the construction industry.
"Now look, I'm not an anti-vaxxer, although I think that people generally speaking have a right not to be vaccinated if that's their choice," he told the Institute of Public Affairs Australia's Heartland podcast.
"Obviously people shouldn't break the law, but you've got people there at the Shrine of Remembrance with flags, with placards, to the best of my observation they were simply there to make a point.
"They weren't being violent, they weren't being vandalistic, they weren't being destructive."
Construction workers faced off with riot police as they marched to Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance on day three of protests that was condemned by many people and labelled as "nothing short of disrespectful".
Mr Abbott said the demonstrators were exercising their rights to free speech against Victoria's ongoing coronavirus restrictions, which he said were "becoming absolutely unreasonable".
"I saw a lot of people who maybe were a little misguided, maybe were a little over the top, but I saw a lot of people there who are sick and tired of restrictions, which, frankly, are now becoming absolutely unreasonable," he said.
"Then you had the Victorian Police lined up like storm troopers, eventually charging them with rubber bullets and tear gas."
CFMEU Victorian Secretary John Setka lashed out at protesters following the new of the the two week construction industry shut down.
"Those drunken fascist un-Australian morons are the reason construction workers will be sitting at home and not getting paid for the next 2 weeks," the union leader tweeted last week.
CFMEU released a statement condemning the "attack" on the Victorian headquarters last Monday that was "heavily infiltrated" by "neo-Nazis and other right wing extremists".

Australia – Sydney residents were warned if they don’t take the Covid jab, they face total social isolation indefinitely after the stay-at-home order ends in December.
Far-left New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian on Tuesday put the unvaccinated on notice.

League hopes to build 'baseball ecosystem' in China
Major League Baseball is expanding its partnership with the Chinese Communist Party, coming at the expense of U.S. jobs and growing Chinese influence over America's pastime.
The country's leading propaganda outlet China Daily on Aug. 20 touted the MLB’s attempts to build a "baseball ecosystem" within the country. The league has grown its network to more than 100 Chinese baseball teams in 20 cities, with a growing fanbase of millions. The league's operations in cahoots with Beijing are not just limited to play—quality U.S. jobs are also at stake. Miken Sports, a baseball equipment brand that provides business to the league, folded a Minnesota production plant and moved its nearly 70 jobs to China.
The league’s interest in exporting jobs and resources to China is drawing fierce rebukes from lawmakers. Rep. Jim Hagedorn (R., Minn.), whose district includes the Miken plant, introduced a resolution on Wednesday obtained by the Washington Free Beacon blasting the MLB for taking away American jobs.
"Baseball is considered to be America’s national pastime, so it is completely outrageous that the MLB has decided to shut down the Miken Sports plant in Caledonia and outsource American jobs to communist China—directly defying the MLB’s position as an American sports league," Hagedorn said. "Miken has been one of the largest employers in Caledonia for decades, and this community will face major hardships and job losses due to this closure. We are urging the MLB to reverse this decision, purchase products that are made in America, and work to keep these jobs at home."
The MLB has also tapped savvy business professionals with deep ties to Chinese industry to oversee production. Tony Qi, the managing director of MLB China, leads the league's operations in China. The MLB tapped Qi to grow activities in China in 2019, citing his work with Chinese state media, tech supergiant Tencent, and other Chinese conglomerates. In an August interview, Qi praised the Chinese government for its cooperation and assistance in establishing the MLB brand in China.
"Government policy is also a huge help," Qi said. "China is now aiming to let the next generation enjoy various sports, and has implemented a series of preferential policies. So more and more baseball clubs are growing in China. … The baseball environment has changed dramatically since MLB entered the Chinese market."
The MLB did not return a request for comment. The MLB Players Association did not return a request for comment.
Ambitious efforts from the league come shortly after the MLB appealed to Chinese tech giant Tencent—noted for its surveillance activities, human rights abuses, and ties to the military—to grow its brand. The league signed a three-year contract with the Chinese company in 2021 to stream games across Asia. Chinese state media framed the agreement as a step forward for Sino-American relations, even as the two countries feud over issues such as the genocide of Uyghur Muslims, economic espionage, and military buildup.
The MLB's cooperation with the Chinese regime also comes amid Beijing's criticism of American domestic political figures for alleged civil rights abuses. The league moved its All-Star Game from Atlanta to Denver in protest of a voting law signed by Gov. Brian Kemp (R., Ga.), citing the need for the league to express its "values."
Michael Sobolik, a fellow at the American Foreign Policy Council, said the values expressed by the league more resemble a "cynical PR campaign" than a stand on principle.
