This sounds exactly like what the (supposed) Wikileaks people on endchan said was happening to their systems after Assange's deadman switch fired. They claimed they had found some data but any system that looked at it was fried, as if there was a virus already inside every one of their computers to brick it if it saw that data pattern. They posted some code on Github and then they all went quiet. It was weird.

I would add to that, edit the file and change a byte or two somewhere in the metadata or change the jpeg compression level if it uses jpeg compression so it no longer matches the original file. Or run it through pdf2ps and back. Leave the content the same but make it not the original file.
