I have always mistrusted the banking system since I was old enough to know what it is. Something just never smelled right. For that reason, credit card debt has never been an issue. If I don't have the cash on hand, I don't buy. I also don't use a debit card (except for major purchases).
Stay clear of the banking system. At the very least, keep your cash safely at home. I don't have much cash in the first place. I don't know about the advice to buy gold and silver. There would need to be an agreement to cut up the precious metals into quantities suitable for small purchases. And who is really gonna trust your gold? Seems complicated.
