Retired boxing icon Manny Pacquiao was reportedly the first to file the candidacy to be the next president of the Philippines, in Manila on Friday as registration kicks off for thousands of political posts in what is expected to be a hotly contested general election in May 2022.

The week-long registration - usually a festive event attracting big crowds - is set to be quieter this year with restrictions in place to fight one of Asia's deadliest COVID-19 outbreaks, although Pacquiao was greeted by thousands of supporters on his way to the registration building.

People could be seen waiting by the Roxas Boulevard roadside, waving banners and flags.

A former ally of President Rodrigo Duterte, the 12-time world boxing champion and Philippines senator announced his retirement from the ring on Wednesday.

SOT, Ramon Ybanez, Pacquiao supporter (Tagalog): "We see that Pacquiao has true traits of a leader to govern our country. Pacquiao is straightforward and he doesnโ€™t like corruption. Unlike other politicians who will surely steal from the government. We believe that Pacquiao has the ability to govern our country because he has enough money and what he will do it's to just help our poor countrymen. Pacquiao is our idol, he had brought the Philippines to the world stage and through him, we believe that the Philippines will prosper again."
