Know thyself. Through the stories of the many gods an individual can learn of the many aberrations that can befall or become of their existence / experience of life. The lesson also come with means of prevention.

Single God (monotheism)

Know God. Through the stories an individual learns of the many way in which God can be recognized from ones own observations and sensation.

To know ones self is to know god.
