CAMBRIDGE, Mass.(BUSINESS WIRE) Moderna, Inc., (Nasdaq: MRNA) a biotechnology company pioneering messenger RNA (mRNA) therapeutics and vaccines, today announced that Elizabeth (Betsy) Nabel, M.D. has been appointed to the Company’s Board of Directors.

Dr. Nabel was previously a member of Moderna’s Board of Directors from December 2015 to July 2020. Through February 2021, she was President of Brigham Health, which includes Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, and the Brigham and Women’s Physician Organization, a position she held from 2010.

The president of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dr. Elizabeth “Betsy” Nabel, is stepping down after 11 years leading the prestigious nonprofit medical center to pursue opportunities in the for-profit biotech sector.

Nabel said Tuesday that she will depart March 1 and begin working with her husband, Dr. Gary Nabel, who recently left a high-profile job at the drug company Sanofi and launched his own biotech startup.

Her decision to step down from the Brigham, she said, was unrelated to a controversy last year about her previous role as a board member at Moderna, the high-flying biotech company that has developed one of the leading vaccines for COVID-19.

When she leaves the Brigham, Nabel said, she plans initially to focus on her husband’s new venture, which is developing immune therapies for cancer and infectious diseases

UCSF Health physicians have successfully treated a patient with severe depression by tapping into the specific brain circuit involved in depressive brain patterns and resetting them using the equivalent of a pacemaker for the brain.

The study, which appears in the Oct. 4, 2021, issue of Nature Medicine, represents a landmark success in the years-long effort to apply advances in neuroscience to the treatment of psychiatric disorders.

“This study points the way to a new paradigm that is desperately needed in psychiatry,” said Andrew Krystal, PhD, professor of psychiatry and member of the UCSF Weill Institute for Neurosciences. “We’ve developed a precision-medicine approach that has successfully managed our patient’s treatment-resistant depression by identifying and modulating the circuit in her brain that’s uniquely associated with her symptoms.”

House Administration Committee ranking member Rodney Davis on Monday announced the launch of a webpage for Capitol Police officers to confidentially report problems affecting the department directly to the committee, which has oversight of the police force.

“This committee has a responsibility to the men and women who protect the Capitol to provide oversight of their leadership and part of this is hearing from officers and other personnel when issues arise,” Davis, R-Ill., said in a statement.

“To be honest, I think it’s a way towards transparency,” said Gus Papathanasiou, the head of the department’s union. He later added, “If Rodney Davis wants to do it, I support it.”

Anyone can submit complaints to Capitol Police Inspector General Michael A. Bolton’s office, but the new site gives officers another avenue to raise issues with the committee staff
