Women had a dowry. They were owned by their fathers and considered a liability and had to be married off to an older man to be cared for.
They had no rights. Their rights only existed thru their husbands.
By the time a boy was a teenager, he was ready to learn a trade, to do an Apprenticeship. But he wasn't ready to get married until he could financially support himself. A girl could be married to a guy who was 10 years older than herself and it didn't matter. She could bear children.
Nowadays kids are separated by age because of the Socialist Public School System.
