Merck’s Game Changing Antiviral for COVID

Effective and safe??? HIV antiretroviral drugs were thought to be safe as well based on similar studies like the one discussed here by Dr. Campbell. However, concurrent with the use of these drugs in HIV patients, we saw the emergence of HIV associated dementia (HAD) with neuropathological features similar to Alzheimer’s disease, such as beta amyloid deposits in the brain. The conventional explanation has been that because these drugs have poor penetration to the brain, the HIV would increase replication in the brain and that virus was the primary cause of HAD.

However, it was discovered (~2006) that these HIV antiretroviral drugs increase beta amyloid production in the same human cell based models used in Alzheimer’s research. I know this because I coauthored the first research paper reporting these effects of HIV antiretroviral drugs. Unfortunately, NIH was not enthusiastic about funding in further investigation into the possibility that these drugs were causing the dementia as opposed to HIV.

I mention this to raise the possibility that these new oral antivirals being rolled out by Big Pharma for COVID likely have off target toxic effects that are not readily apparent in these short term studies. After all, many of these drugs like remdesivir were originally developed for other viruses (eg Ebola) and failed. Thus, it is unlikely that any of these “new” drugs were specifically developed for COVID.

Although the same can be said of HCQ, ivermectin, and quercetin in terms of their reported antiviral properties against COVID, a major difference is these ladder therapeutic agents have far more data in far larger sample sizes demonstrating safety and efficacy clinically than these newer drugs being developed by Big Pharma.

The only thing really “game changing” about the new Merck drug is that the crony capitalism that favors billion dollar block buster profits over saving human life is now the huge elephant in the room under a spot light that everyone can see. The real challenge now for the future of Big Pharma is figuring out how to make this huge elephant disappear. Not likely IMO 😎

>“game changing”

Another “game changing” aspect of this new Merck drug was that it caused Moderna’s stock to tank while not effecting Pfizer’s stock. Why?

My high octane speculation:

Because Moderna’s original business development plan was to eventually displace oral therapeutics altogether making RNA based vaccines the new monopoly in treating human disease. We should never forget that Moderna was over leveraged by 30 billion and near bankruptcy in late 2019. COVID-19 saved the company from certain death, which is why its top executives sold their stock holdings (to the shock and dismay of investors) as soon as the stock price rose on news that they would be developing a COVID-19 vaccine. The unexpected “good” news about Merck’s drug reminded investors that oral pharmaceuticals are far from being replaced by RNA vaccines and this was bad news for those private investors who put up the first 100 million for Moderna when it was just a mere business plan crafted by those blind by hubris. Based on Fauci’s dismissal of Merck’s “good” news in favor of vaccines as still the superior approach to deal with viruses, I wonder if the FDA will be pressured into approving Merck’s EVU for use in only those who have been vaccinated.

Virology Professor’s MOAB against Vaccine Mandates

Byan Bridle is a professor of viral immunology at the University of Guelph in Canada. His letter to the president of his university is a ten-megaton bomb directed at vaccine mandates. Glad to finally see some in academia with scientific integrity are beginning to take a stand publicly.

>Cyber Polygon 2021

On June 9, 2021, the III annual international online training event Cyber Polygon took place. It connects various global organisations to train their competencies, exchange best practices and bring tangible results to the world community. 200 organizations from 48 countries tested their skills in repelling cyber threats as part of Cyber Polygon 2021.

Cyber Polygon is an initiative by strategic digital risk management company BI.ZONE, part of Sber’s ecosystem, with support from the World Economic Forum (WEF) Centre for Cybersecurity and INTERPOL.

The training event consists of two parallel tracks: an online conference for a wide audience and a practical segment for cybersecurity experts.

Two hundred organizations took part in the technical training event, including major financial and technological companies and representatives of public institutions, law enforcement agencies, telecommunications and energy organizations, and a variety of other sectors. The teams learned how to deflect targeted supply chain attacks within a corporate ecosystem.

The high-level expert discussion during the online conference on different cybersecurity aspects involved Steve Wozniak, Apple co-founder; Jürgen Stock, Secretary-General of Interpol; Roger Halbheer, Chief Security Advisor, Microsoft; Peter Maurer, President, International Committee of the Red Cross; Mark Barnett, President of Mastercard Europe; Mathew Dill, Global Head of Strategic Partnerships and Ventures, Senior Vice President, Visa, and other international speakers.
