Although significant swaths of the acreage belonging to the nation’s largest landowner are well off the beaten path — take, for instance, the enormous stands of timberland in the North Maine Woods — tens of thousands of Coloradans enjoy one of Malone’s ranches on a daily basis. The Centennial State’s 21,000-acre GREENLAND RANCH is a bastion of open space along the Front Range. Set in the rolling hills that form a natural break between Denver and Colorado Springs, it is surrounded by an ever-expanding grid of subdivisions, shopping centers, and office parks along Interstate 25. With the support of Douglas County, Great Outdoors Colorado, and The Conservation Fund, however, the oldest operating cattle ranch along Colorado’s Front Range continues its historic mission to this day.
