Comedian Poundstone charged with molesting child

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) – Comedian Paula Poundstone was arrested Wednesday by Santa Monica police and charged with lewd acts upon a child and child endangerment, authorities said.
A statement released by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said Poundstone, 41, was arrested on a felony warrant for three counts of committing a lewd act on an unidentified girl under the age of 14.
The statement said she was also charged with endangering two other unidentified girls and two boys.
Police said Poundstone was held briefly at the Santa Monica jail before posting a $200,000 bond. The date of her arraignment in Santa Monica has not been set.
The statement said the alleged lewd acts were committed May 19 and June 6, and the child endangerment committed on June 6.
Poundstone has been a foster parent since 1993, and has adopted three children. A Santa Monica police spokesman would not comment when asked if the charges involved Poundstone's foster children.
A statement from police said Poundstone was arrested in Malibu following a lengthy investigation conducted by police, the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services, and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office.
Poundstone's personal manager, Bonnie Burns of Burns & Burns Management, said, "I know Paula Poundstone well enough to know these charges are 100 percent incorrect."
"She has been an incredible parent, she's made huge sacrifices to see the children who weren't dealt the best cards in life were well taken care of, and she's always shown herself to be completely honorable and full of integrity," Burns said.
"I believe when the truth comes out, you'll see these charges are unsubstantiated and without merit."
Poundstone began her career as a stand-up comic and currently appears on the syndicated television show "To Tell the Truth." She has won two Cable Ace awards, an American Comedy Award for best female stand-up at the American Comedy Awards, and a local Emmy award.

BRIAN NELSON, CNN CORRESPONDENT: We want to break in right now and go out to Malibu, California, where Paula Poundstone, the comedian, is making a statement to members of the press before her arraignment. Let's hear what she has to say.
UNIDENTIFIED ATTORNEY: The district attorney's has taken the position that we are not entitled to any discovery prior to our first court appearance. And rather than sitting in the dark any longer we asked the court yesterday, and the court agreed, to advance the case to today's date for her arraignment. Paula is eager to have her day in court and we're ready to get started.
We are anxious to find out what the basis of these allegations are. When we go into court, we are going to plead not guilty, and we are confident that when all the facts come out Paula will be exonerated of all the charges against her. Lastly, we have received a phenomenal amount of support from people around this community, around the country and, indeed, around the world, people who know and love Paula and stood by her at this time of need. Paula has asked me to convey her heartfelt thanks to all those who have stood by her and support her. Thank you very much.

But everything changes. So everything now at this hour, as you just saw, the comedian is in a Santa Monica courtroom where she will finally hear the official accusations against her.
Poundstone was arrested last week and charged with committing a lewd act on a girl under 14 and child endangerment. Her three adopted children and two foster children are in protective custody.
Poundstone's lawyer had her arraignment moved up to today from July 27, and you've just heard, he says that his client wants to know now what the exact allegations are against her so that she can begin her defense – Daryn?
KAGAN: Well, since this does involve a juvenile I know there's very few details out there and, in fact, you heard Paula Poundstone's attorney, as you said, saying they want this arraignment moved up so that they can learn some more because they feel a little bit in the dark.
SYDNEY: That's right.
KAGAN: But have we at least heard, though, that the allegations do, are somehow connected to one of her foster children?
SYDNEY: We've heard that but until we hear exactly what goes on in that courtroom today, Daryn, let's just not guess. We'll know in a very short amount of time.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. – Paula Poundstone can't resume her comedy career until she completes 180 days in an alcohol rehabilitation center, a judge ruled today.
Defense attorney Steven Cron argued that she should be allowed to return for limited appearances, but Superior Court Judge Bernard Kamins said the comedian who pleaded no contest Sept. 12 to child endangerment would benefit from focusing on her problems.
Poundstone, 41, has already served 125 days in rehabilitation, for which she volunteered even before her plea, and has received good progress reports.
Kamins, who presided over the sentencing hearing, said he doubted a delay in returning to work would hurt Poundstone.
"I note she has a very unique sense of humor," the judge said. "I don't think that's going to go away."
The judge also placed Poundstone on five years' probation and ordered her to perform 200 hours of community service, pay a $1,000 fine and restitution including child therapy costs, attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and a child abuse program, receive a year of counseling and undergo random drug and alcohol testing.
The comedian was also barred from ever taking in foster children again.
Poundstone, who has three adopted children and had two foster children until her June 27 arrest, was originally charged with three counts of committing a lewd act on a girl under age 14 and endangering two other girls and two boys.
Under terms of a plea bargain, prosecutors dropped the lewd conduct charges. Poundstone blamed her drinking for some of her problems but had maintained that the lewd conduct allegations were untrue.
"I don't think this person needs to be in a jail cell," Kamins said. "Ms. Poundstone, I think you have suffered quite a bit with embarrassment and trying to wrestle with your problems."
Poundstone's relationship to the children involved in the case and the alleged actions that led to the charges were never publicly released.
The defense attorney said Poundstone's adopted children have visited her several times a week during rehabilitation.
Poundstone did not speak to reporters but issued a written statement.
"My drinking helped to create a dangerous situation for the children. For this I am very sorry," she said, adding: "For my kids' sake, as well as my own, I am determined to put my alcohol problems behind me."
The judge noted that while Poundstone must not drink alcohol or be in places where it is sold, including bars and liquor stores, she would be allowed to perform in nightclubs.

LOS ANGELES - Comic Paula Poundstone, saying that the "truth prevailed," pleaded no contest to child endangerment Wednesday after prosecutors dropped sex charges against her in a plea deal expected to spare her prison time.
The 41-year-old comic pleaded no contest to one felony count of child endangerment and one misdemeanor count of inflicting injury on a child, Los Angeles County District Attorney's spokeswoman Jane Robison said.
Prosecutors dropped three counts that accused Poundstone, who was arrested in June and has been in an alcohol rehabilitation center ever since, of committing a lewd act on a child under 14.
"At the beginning of this nightmare I said I trusted the truth," Poundstone said in a statement released after she entered her pleas in a Santa Monica courtroom. "Today, the truth prevailed."
"The lewd conduct charges against me were dropped because they weren't true," Poundstone said in the statement. "I pled no contest to the child endangerment/injury charges because they were. My drinking helped to create a dangerous situation for the children (and) for this I am very sorry."
"All I can say is I am working very hard to overcome my alcohol problem," she said. "For my kids' sake as well as my own I am determined to succeed."
Robison said the child endangerment charge involved her drinking and driving with four children in the car, but would not discuss the child injury count.
She added that, as part of Poundstone's plea agreement, prosecutors will recommend that she be placed on five years supervised probation with the condition that the comic spend 180 days in a secure alcohol rehabilitation facility.
Robison said Poundstone would also be required to submit to psychiatric counseling once a week for a year, perform 200 hours of community service and pay a $1,000 fine.
Robison said the victims named in the case were Poundstone's two adopted children and three foster children that she was caring for. Robison said the foster children had already been taken from Poundstone, who would regain custody of her adopted children.
She said she could not discuss why Poundstone who entered the plea one day after she was scheduled to begin a preliminary hearing in the case that was postponed by Tuesday's devastating airplane attacks in New York and Washington would no longer face the lewd conduct charges.
"We can't say anything more than that," Robison said. "After further investigation we believe this is an appropriate way the case should be handled and resolved."
The Massachusetts-born Poundstone, who has appeared on the syndicated TV game show To Tell the Truth, was due in court later on Wednesday to discuss the terms of her sentence with the judge.
