CIA Creates New Mission Group to Counter Threats From China

The Central Intelligence Agency said it will create a top-level working group aimed at China, calling Beijing “the most important geopolitical threat” America faces today.

The formation of China Mission Center announced on Oct. 7 aims to address “the global challenge posed by the People’s Republic of China,” CIA director William Burns said on Thursday, adding that such challenge “cuts across all of the Agency’s mission areas.”

A senior CIA official said the agency will hire Mandarin speakers and mobilize Chinese specialists globally.

The new working unit will “further strengthen our collective work on the most important geopolitical threat we face in the 21st century, an increasingly adversarial Chinese government,” Burns said in a statement, stressing that the threat is from the Chinese government, not the Chinese people.

“Throughout our history, CIA has stepped up to meet whatever challenges come our way,” he told the workforce. “And now facing our toughest geopolitical test in a new era of great power rivalry, CIA will be at the forefront of this effort.”

Justice Department in 2018 launched the China Initiative to counter economic espionage from China. The first line on the initiative’s home page states that around 80 percent of economic espionage prosecutions would benefit the Chinese state. In September, the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI)’s director Christopher Wray said his agency “is “opening a new China counterintelligence investigation every 12 hours.”

The initiatives from Burns mark his first major moves since taking office in March and fall in line with the priorities he laid out before taking office.

During his confirmation hearing in February, Burns had characterized “out-competing China” as “key to our national security in the decades ahead,” although he also highlighted issues such as climate change and denuclearization as areas of “mutual interests.”

Chilean Authorities Arrest 9 Suspected Human Smugglers

hilean authorities arrested nine suspected members of a Latin American criminal group, which is said to have trafficked at least 267 children as young as six years old, Interpol reported on Monday.

However, the migrants decided to venture north in search of new economic opportunities, according to a Reuters article detailing how Haitian migrants are finding their way to the United States.

Chile's Criminal Investigations Police (Policía de Investigaciones – PDI) began receiving reports in January 2020 that an abnormally large flow of children were crossing their northern border into Peru.

In the wake of the pandemic that soon followed, authorities across South America began reporting that an increasing number of Chilean children of Haitian descent had become stranded along their border stations, unable to continue travelling north.

Interpol said that in some cases, the children “were not travelling with their real parents and, in other instances, they had been abandoned or their parents had died en route.”

In March of the same year, Chile reached out to Interpol’s Human Trafficking and Smuggling of Migrants unit for assistance. The Lyon-based global crime agency supplied intelligence which allowed PDI to compile a list of 267 minors who were trafficked by the group.

Authorities have not confirmed whether or not this list comprises all of the ring’s known child victims. Chile and Interpol have opened Yellow Notices for all 267 children.

A Yellow Notice is a global police alert for a missing person. Its purpose is to give authorities the information needed to rescue victims of kidnappings or otherwise unexplained disappearances, much like Amber Alerts.

In an operation codenamed ‘Frontera Norte’ (Northern Border), Chile’s PDI arrested the nine suspects in the city of Arica. Overall, the smuggling ring is believed to have smuggled an estimated 1,000 Haitian migrants and their children from Chile, destined for Mexico and the United States.

“It is horrifying to think what these vulnerable children, some just a few years old, have suffered,” said Interpol Secretary General Jürgen Stock.

Police methods used in Operation Frontera Norte are said to fall within the framework of a previous Interpol operation, dubbed ‘Turquesa II’.

Turquesa II was an Interpol-led joint initiative of 32 countries from across the globe. Conceived to dismantle transnational smuggling and trafficking groups, the operation resulted in more than 200 arrests and rescued close to 100 victims of human trafficking and sexual exploitation.

On Thursday Infowars posted footage from Jessica Wilson’s funeral. Jessica’s uncle blamed her death on the experimental COVID vaccine.

“Jessica felt coerced. She felt robbed of her ability to choose, her ability to say, ‘No,’ to say, ‘No’ to a medical procedure she did not want was taken from her.”

On Tuesday, the Washington State Department of Health acknowledged Wilson’s death in a news release admitting she died “from a blood clot after receiving the J & J vaccine.”

UPDATED: Attack Submarine USS Connecticut Suffers Underwater Collision in South China Sea

Almost a dozen sailors have been injured after a U.S. nuclear attack submarine hit an unknown underwater object in the South China Sea, USNI News has learned.

The Seawolf-class nuclear attack submarine USS Connecticut (SSN-22) suffered an underwater collision while operating in international waters on Oct. 2 and is returning to port in U.S. 7th Fleet, a U.S. Pacific Fleet spokesman confirmed to USNI News on Thursday.

“The Seawolf-class fast-attack submarine USS Connecticut (SSN-22) struck an object while submerged on the afternoon of Oct. 2, while operating in international waters in the Indo-Pacific region. The safety of the crew remains the Navy’s top priority. There are no life-threatening injuries,” Capt. Bill Clinton told USNI News.

“The submarine remains in a safe and stable condition. USS Connecticut’s nuclear propulsion plant and spaces were not affected and remain fully operational. The extent of damage to the remainder of the submarine is being assessed. The U.S. Navy has not requested assistance. The incident will be investigated.”

A defense official told USNI News about 11 sailors were hurt in the incident with moderate to minor injuries. The attack boat is now headed to Guam and is expected to pull in within the next day, the official said. The underwater strike occurred in the South China Sea and the attack boat has been making its way to Guam on the surface since Saturday, a defense official confirmed to USNI News.

The Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton, Wash., based submarine deployed on May 27 for the Pacific, the Navy announced at the time. The service has released photographs of the submarine operating in the Western Pacific with port calls in Japan in late July and August. U.S. 7th Fleet commander Adm. Karl Thomas visited the submarine in August, according to the service.

Connecticut is one of three Sea Wolf-class boats, a late Cold War attack submarine designed to hunt the most complex Soviet submarines in deep blue water. Along with USS Sea Wolf (SSN-21) and USS Jimmy Carter (SSN-23), Connecticut is among the Navy’s most capable and sensitive attack boats.

The last known instance where a submerged U.S. submarine struck another underwater object was in 2005. Then, USS San Franciso (SSN -711) struck an underwater mountain at full speed near Guam. One sailor died in the incident.

De Blasio Misused Public Resources For Family's Benefit: Report

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio misused public resources for his own political and personal benefit - and has not reimbursed the city for security costs related to his presidential campaign, according to the New York Times, citing a city investigation released on Thursday.

Among other things, de Blasio deployed his security detail to move his activist daughter to Gracie Mansion, while the city spent nearly $320,000 for members of his security detail to travel during his presidential campaign trips in 2019.

According to the Times:

The report painted a deeply unflattering portrait of Mr. de Blasio’s reliance on his security detail — behavior that a top investigator said amounted to the mayor having his own personal “concierge service” to shuttle around relatives and staffers.

It found that the use of a police van and personnel to help move Mr. de Blasio’s daughter was “a misuse of N.Y.P.D. resources for a personal benefit,” and that Howard Redmond, the police inspector in charge of the family’s security detail, had “actively obstructed and sought to thwart this investigation.”

At a news conference, Margaret Garnett, the commissioner of the investigation department, said that Mr. Redmond had deleted communications and that he had tried to destroy his cellphone after he was told to surrender it. She said that she had referred Mr. Redmond’s conduct to the Manhattan district attorney’s office for a criminal investigation into obstruction of justice.

De Blaso, who has just three months left in office as he mulls a run for New York governor, has faced multiple investigations into his fundraising practices during his time in office - including a 2017 incident in which prosecutors raised questions but ultimately declined to bring criminal charges.

The mayor pushed back on Thursday, criticizing the findings as "naïve" and blaming advice he had received about using the detail.
