when Dave had Fender custom shop make him this red strat, he originally had a 57 V neck with a humbucker in the first position (fat, as they call it) ; he didn't like it and sent it back so they hung it on a hook (the neck says 1991) and in about year 2000 i bought it from them as they just wanted to get rid of it and i wanted a fat strat (only $949 and much less then them making it for me at the custom shop) ; some guitar store guru guy checked the serial number, etc and says it checks out as a true story ; a very nice piece ; also have 1978 Les Paul gold top I bought as a kid….$400 ; it was a "defect" having a rosewood fretboard on a maple neck ; they said they stopped the guy after he had made 42 of them "wrong" ; so they sent them out to get rid of (but i never knew anything other than i could afford a les paul at age 14!) ; the thing still has incredibly low action ; guy checked serial number on that one too and the story checked out and offered me $6800 for it (no dice) ; i just got really lucky both times, being a cheap fucker….as if by fate? have played the shit out of them in multiple bands and such over the decades ; time to get the band back together
