Jack Moore

What Did Jaclyn Moore Say About Dave Chappelle?

Posted on 10/08/2021

DAVE Chappelle is a world renowned comedian who is widely considered one of the industry's greatest comics.

Chappelle landed himself in hot water after his comedy special The Closer aired on Netflix.

What did Dave Chappelle say about DaBaby?

Chappelle joked he wanted to "negotiate the release of DaBaby" with the LGBTQ community.

He also stated DaBaby shot and killed a man in 2018, claiming self-defense, but that he felt his action was not taken as seriously as his homophobic comments.

"Do you see where I'm going with this?" Chappelle asked.

In America, he said, shooting a man to death is fine, but "you better not hurt a gay person's feelings."

What else did Dave Chappelle say in the special?

At the end of his special, Chappelle insisted he won't be making any more LGBTQ jokes going forward, but he made sure to get some final punchlines in.

Following backlash and canceled appearances, DaBaby issued an apology for his comments in August.

In his hour-long special, he said he is "team TERF" ā€“ the term for trans-exclusionary radical feminist.

TERF refers to people who describe themselves as feminists but who exclude the rights of transgender people from women's rights.

The star defended Harry Potter author JK Rowling ,who has made numerous controversial remarks about trans people.

He spoke explicitly about transgender women's genitals, making a comparison to vegan "meat."

"Iā€™m not saying itā€™s not py, but itā€™s Beyond Py or Impossible Py. It tastes like py, but thatā€™s not quite what it is, is it? Thatā€™s not blood, thatā€™s beet juice.ā€

Dave then recalled a disturbing incident where he supposedly beat up a lesbian woman, claiming the woman later tried to sell the story to TMZ.

He said: ā€œIā€™m glad TMZ didnā€™t believe that ā€“ because I did beat the s**t out of her, Iā€™m not gonna lie. It was her fault. I had no choice.ā€

Dave said he'll be leaving off the LGBTQ jokes "until we are both sure that we are laughing together."

He talked about Daphne Dorman, a white transgender woman who supported his jokes and who Dave became friends with before she died by suicide in 2019.

"Iā€™m telling you, itā€™s done. Iā€™m done talking about it."

What did Jaclyn Moore say about Dave Chappelle?

Jaclyn Moore, a showrunner for Dear White People, claimed she would be boycotting Netflix for Chappelle's comments.

She tweeted that she "will not work with [Netflix] as long as they continue to put out and profit from blatantly and dangerously homophobic content."

Moore transitioned during production of the show's last season.

She tweeted that Chappelle was once "one of [her] heroes," but the jokes he made in the special "have real world consequences" for trans women.

"So when he says people should be mad a trans woman won a 'Woman of the Year' award ā€¦ When he misgendersā€¦ When he says he should've told that mother her daughter WAS A DUDE ā€¦ I just can't ā€¦ I can't be a part of a company that thinks that's worth putting out and celebrating," she said.

In an exclusive interview with Variety, Moore expanded on her thoughts.

"I do believe in freedom of speech," she told Variety's Marc Malkin.

"I really do. But I have the freedom of speech to say that somebody's speech bothers me, and I don't want to work with a company that promotes that speech. It's dangerous. It's dangerous language. I can't say it any clearer."

Dear White People is a BLM show

HOLLYWOOD Jack "Jaclyn" Moore is now Trans woman

Now going against Chappelle a masculine black male who talks truth re: the absurdity of transpeople

Do you see obvious agenda the push here

Is Jack really doing the trans shit because he wants to or is blackmail involved, forced to perhaps???

Either way HE is a MAN with mental issues and an agenda. Not a woman will never be.

BY ANY MEANS NECCESARY (BAMN) on PR photos/images is not accident

ā€˜Dear White Peopleā€™ Co-Showrunner Jaclyn Moore on Why Sheā€™s Boycotting Netflix Over Transphobic Dave Chappelle Special (EXCLUSIVE)

Jaclyn Moore has always considered Dave Chappelle one of her ā€œcomic heroes.ā€

ā€œHis shadow is huge,ā€ says Moore, who was a writer and co-showrunner on Netflixā€™s ā€œDear White People.ā€ ā€œHeā€™s a brilliant goofy comedian, heā€™s brilliant as a political comedian. He has been brilliant for so so long, but I also donā€™t think because youā€™ve been brilliant means that youā€™re always brilliant.ā€

Moore announced on Twitter and Instagram on Wednesday night that she would no longer work with Netflix after she watched Chappelleā€™s latest standup special, ā€œThe Closer,ā€ which premiered on the streamer on Tuesday. In the special, Chappelle makes numerous jokes about trans women.

Moore transitioned during the pandemic, a journey she has chronicled across her social media platforms.

ā€œAfter the Chappelle special, I canā€™t do this anymore. I wonā€™t work for @netflix again as long as they keep promoting and profiting from dangerous transphobic content,ā€ she wrote on Instagram.

She also tweeted, ā€œI love so many of the people Iā€™ve worked with at Netflix. Brilliant people and executives who have been collaborative and fought for important artā€¦.But Iā€™ve been thrown against walls because, ā€œIā€™m not a ā€˜realā€™ woman.ā€ Iā€™ve had beer bottles thrown at me. So, @netflix, Iā€™m done.ā€

I talked to Moore on Thursday afternoon from New Orleans, where she is working on the Peacock reboot of ā€œQueer As Folk.ā€

Why did you decide to speak out on Twitter?

I never loved Daveā€™s trans material before but this time it felt different. This is the first time I felt like, ā€˜Oh, people are laughing at this joke and theyā€™re agreeing that itā€™s absurd to call me a woman.ā€™ The fact is thatā€™s the exact rhetoric and language that is used against us. I have had beer bottles thrown at me. I have been thrown against a wall for using a womenā€™s bathroom. I would just say itā€™s ironic that for somebody who famously walked away from a TV show because he felt like the messages of the joke got lost, he doesnā€™t see what the messages of these jokes do to people. He talks about our feelings being hurt. My feelings are fine, but being thrown against a wall hurts or worrying at night if I can get home safe. That stuff is not theoretical. Iā€™m really tired of my existence being a matter of debate, that this is something that we all just get to have an opinion about. We all get to have an opinion whether or not I am what I say I am. Look, I have no desire to cancel Dave Chappelle. He should make whatever he wants to make but I will say to Netflix, itā€™s not like this was a live special. They saw this and were like, ā€œYeah this seems okay to put out there.ā€ The truth is itā€™s not. Itā€™s dangerous and it has real world physical violence repercussions. People like to say, ā€œOh, itā€™s just a joke.ā€ I get the joke. By the way thereā€™s a lot thatā€™s funny about being trans, but the idea that itā€™s funny that we call ourselves women, which was the subtext of a lot of those jokes, is not one of them. Itā€™s actually the same language used by people who seek to hurt us.

Why do think this went through at Netflix? The streamer is known for inclusive and diverse programming and expanding opportunities for the most marginalized.

Thatā€™s a good question. I donā€™t know how it got passed because I will say having worked on a show there, I know that they think about these things and have conversations about these things. I think probably part of it is that Chappelle has carte blanche to say whatever he wants, and I think thatā€™s great. I do believe in freedom of speech. I really do. But I have the freedom of speech to say that somebodyā€™s speech bothers me, and I donā€™t want to work with a company that promotes that speech. Itā€™s dangerous. Itā€™s dangerous language. I canā€™t say it any clearer.

Do you think Chappelle has a responsibility to stop telling these jokes?

I donā€™t think itā€™s my place to tell Dave Chappelle what he needs to do. He should make the jokes that he wants to make. I cannot like them and thatā€™s what Iā€™m saying here.

Do you want Netflix to pull his specials?

I donā€™t think thatā€™s the answer. I donā€™t think thatā€™s a reasonable outcome here. I donā€™t think this material and a lot of his trans material has a place in discourse. I think a lot of his trans material that maybe I personally had given a pass before feels a lot worse in context of this material. Any benefit of the doubt that was given feels like it is gone. But what I really want is I want companies to hire trans people to work there who can say, ā€œHey, we sure about this?ā€ The fact of the matter is there are very rarely trans people in those rooms and yet we are so often the subject of the derision. Weā€™re very rarely in any decision-making positions. And I think thatā€™s my bigger concern. I donā€™t know what Netflix should do, but I feel something needs to be done. Whether thatā€™s removing part of this special, whether thatā€™s amending the special in some way, I donā€™t know. To be honest itā€™s not my job to fix their problem, but I do think they have a problem.

Have you heard from anyone from Netflix since you tweeted last night?

I had a very nice conversation with somebody who I think is a stand up person who wanted to talk and to hear my point of view. And I really respect them for doing that. But it wasnā€™t like something was going to be changing after this one phone call, nor thatā€™s what I expected.

Had you been talking to Netflix about any new projects?

Iā€™m developing stuff currently and thereā€™s always a conversation about where are we going to take the pitch. I am not going to be taking anything to Netflix for the time being. I donā€™t know what it will take for me to feel comfortable in changing that. I know that it will take some action.
