Diogenes the Cynic

Diogenes was a controversial figure. His father minted coins for a living, and Diogenes was banished from Sinope when he took to debasement of currency. After being exiled, he moved to Athens and criticized many cultural conventions of the city. He modelled himself on the example of Heracles, and believed that virtue was better revealed in action than in theory. He used his simple lifestyle and behaviour to criticize the social values and institutions of what he saw as a corrupt, confused society. He had a reputation for sleeping and eating wherever he chose in a highly non-traditional fashion, and took to toughening himself against nature. He declared himself a cosmopolitan and a citizen of the world rather than claiming allegiance to just one place.

Diogenes made a virtue of poverty. He begged for a living and often slept in a large ceramic jar, or pithos, in the marketplace. He became notorious for his philosophical stunts, such as carrying a lamp during the day, claiming to be looking for "an honest man". He criticized Plato, disputed his interpretation of Socrates, and sabotaged his lectures, sometimes distracting listeners by bringing food and eating during the discussions. Diogenes was also noted for having mocked Alexander the Great, both in public and to his face when he visited Corinth in 336 BC.

Diogenes was captured by pirates and sold into slavery, eventually settling in Corinth. There he passed his philosophy of Cynicism to Crates, who taught it to Zeno of Citium, who fashioned it into the school of Stoicism, one of the most enduring schools of Greek philosophy.

Based on the moral ideas of the Cynics, Stoicism laid great emphasis on goodness and peace of mind gained from living a life of virtue in accordance with nature.

Epic name https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epictetus

Epictetus taught that philosophy is a way of life and not just a theoretical discipline. To Epictetus, all external events are beyond our control; we should accept whatever happens calmly and dispassionately. However, individuals are responsible for their own actions, which they can examine and control through rigorous self-discipline.

Epictetus gave European scholars of the Enlightenment an example of a system of ethics that was secular, based not on God's law but on reason and observation of the natural world.

Local protest leader arrested on drug charges as result of murder investigation

A local man who organized several Black Lives Matter protests is in jail on drug charges after a teenager was shot and killed inside his apartment last month.

Court documents show Quincy Russom, 19, was shot and killed February 12 at 615 S. Governor St., No. 6. Criminal complaints list that apartment as the home of Mazin Mohamedali, 20, who was at least at one point, a leader of the Iowa Freedom Riders. It's unknown if he is still a leader of IFR.

Police arrested Sammy Hamed, 22, on February 22 for First-Degree Murder in connection to Russom's death. Records show Iowa City Police executed a search warrant just days later on February 24 at Mohamedali's apartment. It was there police found 56.13 grams of marijuana inside his closet, as well as 42.5 ecstasy pills. Investigators also found a digital scale with marijuana residue on it. Mohamedali is facing two counts of controlled substance violation and failure to affix a drug stamp, as well as one count of keeping a drug house.

An Iowa City Police captain confirmed Mohamedali's charges were the result of the ongoing murder investigation. Police wouldn't say whether Mohamedali is considered as a suspect or having any involvement in the murder, whether he was home at the time of the murder or had any connection to Hamed or Russom. Investigators also wouldn't comment on if the robbery and murder of Russom was related to the drugs that were eventually found in Mohamedali's apartment.

Mohamedali was booked into the Henry County jail on Tuesday and is currently being held there.

Mohamedali was also arrested in June 2020 for his involvement in Black Lives Matter protests in Iowa City. He was, at one time, facing six charges before pleading guilty to a simple misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct.
