Catholic Cathedral in Colorado Vandalized With ‘Satan Lives Here’

The Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Denver, Colorado, was vandalized on Sunday shortly before morning mass.

The vandals covered the beautiful brass front doors and stone columns in graffiti calling Catholic priests “child rapists,” left messages mocking Jesus and wrote “Satan lives here.”

The LGBT catchphrase “love wins” was also scrawled on a nearby statue of Pope John Paul II, according to a report from Fox News.

A witness submitted a statement about the vandalism to police — but no suspects have been taken into custody.

“The cathedral basilica suffered similar vandalism in 2020 during the protests that swept the county in the wake of George Floyd’s death. On the same weekend fires were set to the parish house at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C., vandals spray-painted messages on church property such as ‘There is no God’ and ‘God is dead,'” the Fox report noted.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) reports that at least 97 acts of vandalism have occurred against Roman Catholic churches across 29 states since May 2020.

Bolsonaro Denied Entry to Football Match Due to Not Being Vaccinated

Bolsonaro, who recovered from coronavirus in July last year, reportedly insisted he’s got “more antibodies than those vaccinated“.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been deprived of the opportunity to watch a football match between Santos and Gremio on Sunday because the football club did not allow unvaccinated fans into the stadium, local Metrópoles reported.

“Why a [COVID-19] vaccine passport? I just wanted to watch [the Santos game] and he said I [have to be] vaccinated. Why is that?”, Bolsonaro complained, according to the footage posted by the newspaper.

“I have more antibodies than those who [took the vaccine]”, he added.

Ironically, Bolsonaro was recently forced to eat pizza on a sidewalk after he was not allowed to dine inside at a NYC restaurant, in accordance with state anti-coronavirus measures. The Brazilian leader traveled to New York to participate in the annual UN General Assembly last month.

Bolsonaro is probably the most popular anti-vaxxer worldwide, publicly expressing skepticism over the existing vaccines’ efficacy. However, he told the UNGA summit in September that his administration was not against jabs, but rather they do not approve of vaccine “passes“ and anything obligatory regarding vaccinations.

Joel Osteen’s megachurch shamed into returning $4.4M in PPP loans

Celebrity pastor Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church buckled to pressure and will repay $4.4 million in COVID-19 disaster loans meant for small businesses, according to a new report.

In a statement to the Houston Chronicle, Lakewood — whose pastor Osteen is reportedly worth $50 million — defended its decision to seek support from the Paycheck Protection Program and insisted neither Osteen nor his wife received any of the money.

“Like many organizations temporarily shuttered by the pandemic, this loan provided Lakewood Church short-term financial assistance in 2020 ensuring that its approximately 350 employees and their families would continue to receive a paycheck and full health care benefits,” a church rep told the paper Friday.

The church’s PPP payments came under scrutiny last December. Lakewood — the nation’s largest megachurch — has 368 full-time and part-time employees.

At least 60 religious institutions in Texas received PPP loans, the Chronicle said. Hundreds more across the country also received COVID-19 relief funding.

The large payouts were criticized by some civil libertarians who believe churches should operate entirely financially separate from any government programs.

Lakewood officials have said the organization lost revenue as a result of shutting down in-person service amid COVID-19.

Osteen, a televangelist and New York Times best-selling author, reportedly bought his wife a $200,000 Lamborghini and lives in a $15 million mansion in Houston’s River Oaks neighborhood.

Noem Draws Bipartisan Ire For Demanding South Dakotans Celebrate ‘Native American Heritage’ Instead of Columbus Day

"Don’t wait until Monday to celebrate Native American heritage."

Republican Governor of South Dakota Kristi Noem has faced criticism from both sides of the political spectrum on Sunday for telling state residents “don’t wait until Monday to celebrate Native American heritage” in an official statement. Noem only referred to October 11 as Native Americans’ Day, and omitted any reference to the date’s long national significance as Columbus Day.

“The second Monday in October has been recognized as a federal holiday since 1968. In 1990, South Dakota was the first state to do things a little differently than the rest of the nation,” Noem said. “In South Dakota, we recognize Monday, October 11th, as Native Americans’ Day. We recognize that the Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota people and their culture is part of who we are collectively as South Dakotans. We recognize them traditionally as the O’ceti Sakowin meaning the Seven Council Fires — more commonly known throughout the world as the Great Sioux Nation.”

The statement continued, “In 1990, Governor George S. Mickelson lead the ‘Year of Reconciliation.’ It’s been my goal in public office to continue that mission of recognizing and respecting the nine tribal nations that share our geography. It is my goal to come to the table with tribal leaders to support tribal communities, businesses, and families.”

“This holiday weekend, I encourage every South Dakotan to reach into their own community to support Native-owned businesses, learn more about the local Native American culture, and recognize the shared values we have as South Dakotans,” Noem concluded. “Don’t wait until Monday to celebrate Native American heritage.”

Noem’s tweet about the statement struggled to find support from either side of the aisle.

Xi Says He Wants 'Peaceful Reunification' With Taiwan After Sending 150 Warplanes Near the Island

China’s president, Xi Jinping, says he wants to achieve “peaceful reunification” with Taiwan just days after sending scores of warplanes close to its airspace.

The Taiwanese don’t believe it, which is why they held their own military exercises in response. The U.S. and Great Britain also held military drills late last month, which served to ratchet up tensions in the region.

Xi is looking to head off the U.S. from forging closer ties with Taiwan. And Taiwan has been unusually open in making noises that sound to Beijing’s ears like a desire for independence. The combination of closer ties to the United States and an emboldened Taiwan cannot be allowed by the Communist Chinese government under any circumstances.

But Xi’s saber-rattling carries risks. With so many planes and ships operating in a confined area like the Taiwan Strait, a mistake or miscalculation could involve the U.S. and China in a situation neither wants.

Washington Post:

In Saturday’s speech, Xi did not mention the military drills. Instead, he said that “achieving unification through peaceful means is most in line with the overall interests of Chinese people, including Taiwan compatriots.” However, he also warned that “those who forget their heritage, betray their country and seek to break up their country will come to no good end.”

Xi’s tone took a more conciliatory approach than that of a speech he made in July, when he vowed to “smash” any attempts at Taiwan independence.

There’s a lot at stake for the United States in maintaining an independent Taiwan. The Taiwanese are the linchpin to regional stability and resistance to the Chinese Communists’ bid for hegemony in the region. If Taiwan — a close ally of the United States — were to fail, other nations in the region would have little choice but to submit.

It would be a strategic setback of tremendous proportions—and Taiwan knows it.

Bloomberg:

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, who argues Taiwan is already a sovereign nation, called for the world’s democracies to rally to her government’s defense in an article published Tuesday in Foreign Affairs magazine. She said China gaining control over the island would show that authoritarianism has the upper hand over democracy in the global contest of values.

“As countries increasingly recognize the threat that the Chinese Communist Party poses, they should understand the value of working with Taiwan,” she wrote. “And they should remember that if Taiwan were to fall, the consequences would be catastrophic for regional peace and the democratic alliance system.”

The question for Xi — and for Biden — is should the U.S. go to war to maintain Taiwan’s independence? The actions of both nations will be dictated by the answer to that question.

If Xi doesn’t think America has the stomach to go to war to save Taiwan, the People’s Army will be in Taipei in a heartbeat. But Biden doesn’t want events to get to the point where a decision is forced upon him. President Tsai has already shown a propensity for shooting off her mouth about Taiwan’s independence. This kind of talk enrages Beijing and only serves to destabilize the situation.

So Biden’s game is to keep Taiwan on the back burner and deal with other, more vital issues to America like trade and Chinese aggressiveness in the South China Sea. This won’t please the Taiwan hawks in either party, but it’s the safe course. And the wise course.
