The Daily Express has retracted the claim Russia stole the coronavirus vaccine recipe from UK’s AstraZeneca, replacing it with a statement by Sputnik V’s developers. The Sun merely appended a quote and stands by its false story.

In a Monday ‘bombshell,’ the Sun claimed UK spies “have proof” that Moscow’s flagship Covid-19 vaccine, Sputnik V, was actually inspired by documents “swiped” from AstraZeneca “by a foreign agent in person.” The Express later published its own story, citing the Sun.

On Tuesday, however, the latter tabloid retracted the story entirely – leaving the original headline, but replacing the copy with the text of a statement by the Russian Direct Investment Fund, the outfit that funded Sputnik V’s development at the Gamaleya National Research Center in Moscow.

“The article also contained false information. As an apology, we are happy to set the record straight,” the Express noted in the correction.

The RDIF statement explains that Sputnik V uses two human adenovirus vectors, whereas the AstraZeneca jab opted for a chimpanzee adenovirus. Sputnik V, which is the world’s first registered vaccine against the novel coronavirus that causes Covid-19, was also based on years of prior research in the field – a fact that’s easily verifiable via public records.

“Rather than spreading fake stories, the UK media and Government services should better protect the reputation of AstraZeneca, a safe and efficient vaccine that is constantly attacked by competitors in the media with facts taken out of context,” the RDIF said.

The Sun has not retracted or corrected Monday’s article, however. The tabloid merely added a one-sentence quote from a London PR firm representing the RDIF to the end of the article, describing the original story as “another fake news and blatant lie based on anonymous sources.”

Joe Biden Reacts Late to Clogged Ports Crisis; White House Blames Private Businesses

President Joe Biden will try to address the issue of clogged ports on Wednesday, after months of failing to demonstrate real progress on the issue.

The president will meet at the White House with the executive directors of the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach as well as representatives from Walmart, UPS, FedEx, Target, and Samsung. Biden will also meet with labor unions and trucking and railroad representatives.

But the White House told reporters in a briefing call on Tuesday that the supply chain backlog was ultimately up to private businesses to solve.

“The supply chain is essentially in the hands of the private sector, so we need the private sector to up to help solve these problems,” an official said.

The Los Angeles port and Long Beach port had 81 ships anchored offshore and 62 at berth waiting to get unloaded as of Monday, according to the Associated Press.

On Tuesday, the White House previewed an announcement that the Port of Los Angeles will move to 24/7 service and said that major retailers would commit to using the extra hours to deliver more goods.

A White House official cautioned, however, there was only so much they could do to solve the problem.

“You can’t flip a light switch in this very complicated supply chain and have it change overnight, but we’re already seeing signs of it,” the official told reporters in a briefing call.

The White House also warned there were real long-term limitations about what the ports and shipping process could handle.

“To be clear, no matter what we do in the short term, we ultimately have an issue of capacity of our ports, our freight rail, our roads and bridges,” the official said.

Italy: Pakistanis Arrested After 13-Year-Old Boy Raped in Public Park

Police arrested two Pakistani asylum seekers in the northern Italian city of Aosta for allegedly raping a 13-year-old boy in a public garden.

Ali Raza, 25, and 23-year-old Usama Mazhar were said to have spent Friday afternoon with the boy, with the three of them having been seen drinking alcohol.

That evening, the two Pakistanis, who were granted subsidiary protection in Italy, took the young teen to the gardens near the Aosta train station and raped him, newspaper La Repubblica reports.

According to investigators, a witness passing by saw the abuse and called the police, who later arrived on the scene and found the teen in a state of shock.

The victim was taken to a hospital and was only released on Sunday, while the two Pakistanis were tracked down by police and arrested.

Israel’s Bennet Warns There are Non-Peaceful Ways to Deal With Iran

Bennett wants global powers to hold Iran 'accountable'

On Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennet continued his threats against Iran and warned there are non-peaceful ways to deal with Tehran’s civilian nuclear program.

Bennett accused Iran of not living up to its commitments to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). But Iran has only stopped voluntarily complying with the Additional Protocol, an aspect of the Iran nuclear deal that allows the IAEA to conduct snap inspections. Because the US withdrew from the JCPOA, Iran is no longer bound to follow this measure.

“Iran is blatantly violating the IAEA commitments,” Bennet said at the Jerusalem Post Conference in downtown Jerusalem, according to The Times of Israel. “We’re not going to wait. I expect the global powers to hold them accountable … That would be the peaceful route. There are other routes.”

Ironically, it is because of Israel’s non-peaceful methods that Iran has stopped complying with the Additional Protocol. At the end of 2020, Iran’s parliament passed a bill requiring the suspension of the Additional Protocol after Israel assassinated Iranian scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh inside Iran.

Israel’s aggression has also led to Iran increasing its uranium enrichment. The bill passed by Iran’s parliament required Tehran to enrich some uranium to 20 percent. After Israel attacked Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility in April, Tehran reacted by increasing some enrichment to 60 percent, which is still below the 90 percent needed for weapons grade.

Iran has accused Israel of being behind a June attack on a centrifuge site in Karaj, Iran. IAEA cameras were damaged in the apparent drone attack. Iran has called on the IAEA to condemn the reckless attack, but so far, the nuclear watchdog has stayed silent.
