Tory MP has been slammed after comments dismissing the Harvey Weinstein sexual assault allegations as “dubious to say the least” were attributed to him.

Sir David Amess, MP for Southend West, was quoted as saying the “sudden flurry of alleged inappropriate advances beggars belief”.

However, hours later he issued a retraction, blaming his parliamentary office for issuing a press release which had not been “authorised”.

He said: “Unfortunately, a press release was issued in my name from my office this morning which I had not seen or authorised.

“I was horrified when I read its contents, so I have sought to clarify the issue as soon as possible. I wish to make it perfect plain I abhor what Harvey Weinstein has been accused of and furthermore I think the way that he has allegedly treated some women is disgusting.

“I apologise for any upset that the original press release may have caused and I have now put instructions in place to prevent this happening again.”

It comes after a press release was sent out with his apparent comments on Hollywood producerWeinstein, who has been accused of sexual assault by a number of people. He is being investigated by the Met and US police.

When asked how the press release came to contain the remarks, staff at Sir Amess' office refused to comment.

The original comments, which were published in the Southend Echo, read: “The recent revelations that countless starlets have apparently been assaulted by movie mogul Harvey Weinstein are dubious to say the least.

"Whilst it has no doubt always been the case that some individuals have achieved their big break via the casting couch, this sudden flurry of alleged inappropriate advances beggars belief.

"Just as with the claims againstJimmy Savilehere in the UK, why did no one say anything until now?"

The remarks sparked outrage online, with one Twitter user describing them as “appalling” and another “embarrassing”.

Sir Amess, 65, is well known for being duped into publicly condemning a fictional drug called 'cake' on the satirical show Brass Eye.

The Standard has contacted the Conservative Party press office for comment."

moran. YOU are defending a crown knight who took it upon himself to put the names of two notorious human predators in his mouth.

IQ does not play into that fact. That is your choice and public display. Thus you are a fuckhead crown shill and clearly on the other side of truth exposure. But do post more to further prove this, and to increase your cortisol load.
