Pierre Elliot Trudeau travelled to China with his two eldest sons — Justin and Alexandre — in 1990, barely a year after the Tiananmen Square protests. Alexandre, then 16, remembers that their father lectured them after they goofed off on their way down a famous mountain.
"He was very aware that China has its own very complex, very ancient set of dynamics, and that you couldn't go about things in a harsh way. In this case, it meant telling his young kids they were behaving like savages, in a certain way," he said.
Alexandre Trudeau returned to China in 2006, keeping in mind his father's lessons. Accompanied by a young Chinese guide, he travelled to meet artists, entrepreneurs, villagers, young and old alike.
His purpose was to understand China and the essential role it plays in the world, but to also bring an understanding of China to others. The writing process took nearly 10 years, as he attempted to paint a portrait of this country full of contradictions.

Assistant to the Sergeant at Arms charged with 10 child pornography felonies
An Assistant to the Sergeant at Arms for the U.S. House of Representatives has been arrested and charged with ten felonies related to the possession of child pornography.
Detectives from the Fairfax County Police Department searched the house of Stefan Bieret, 41, of Burke and recovered multiple electronics.
The investigation began when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) was notified of a potentially illicit image being uploaded to a Dropbox account.
Subsequent search warrants led detectives to the identity of the owner of the Dropbox account as Bieret.
Bieret was arrested and charged with 10 counts of possession of child pornography and was taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center and held without bond.
Detectives will continue to examine the digital evidence that was recovered from the scene and consult with the Office of the Fairfax Commonwealth’s Attorney for any additional charges.
