A notorious gang that was behind the abduction of several Roman Catholic clergy earlier this year, has allegedly kidnapped a group of American missionaries on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince.

The missionaries, 16 Americans and a Canadian citizen, including several children, were kidnapped Saturday in the community of Ganthier, according to a human rights center that monitors kidnapping. The group was reportedly taken in the area of La Tremblay' after returning from visiting an orphanage,

The gang believed to be behind the kidnapping is known as 400 Mawozo, which operates in the area and is known for attacking vehicles and kidnapping people from cars and buses.

“This is the type of kidnapping that 400 Mawozo do; we call it a collective kidnapping where they kidnap any entire bus or car,” said Gedeon Jean, who runs the Center for Analysis and Research in Human Rights in Port-au-Prince, which monitors kidnapping in the country. Jean said the gang is responsible for about 80% of the kidnappings taking place in Haiti.

The gang in action

It ended up in the hands of the '400 Mawazo'

Behind the kidnapping of the Italian engineer Vanni Calì, there is a local gang called "400 Mawazo".

It is one of about one hundred bands that have been active on the Caribbean island for several years. The territory where the 400 Mawazo rage in Port-au-Prince is called Croix-des-Bouquets. In April, this gang was credited with the kidnapping of seven clerics, for which a million dollar ransom was demanded.

These actions are, moreover, the latest example of the violence that grips Haiti, there are several areas controlled by armed gangs, which clash regularly to conquer new trafficking and slices of power.

In recent years, the scourge of kidnappings for ransom has exploded: 243 were recorded in 2020 alone, compared to 78 the previous year

Christian Aid Ministries did not respond to a request for comment. According to the group’s website, American staff members returned to its Haiti base in 2020 after being gone for nine months because of political unrest.

3+9+5 = 17

During the first six months of the year, there were at least 395 kidnappings, more than four times the 88 during the same period last year, according to the Center for Analysis and Research in Human Rights in Port-au-Prince. After the assassination in July of President Jovenel Moïse — who was accused of being in league with the very gang members who use kidnappings as a source of revenue and control— abductions dropped briefly, before surging to 73 in August and to 117 in September, according to the center.

The nation continues to reel from a power vacuum following the assassination of Moïse and the August earthquake that killed more than 2,200 people and left tens of thousands of Haitians homeless across the southern part of the country.

Widlore Merancourt in Port-au-Prince contributed to this report.
