My main takeaway is that he thinks it is okay to lie to everyone. Not a problem at all. If you have to be talked into agreeing it was lying, you think it is okay. And I do not even think he got all the way to, "Yes, we lied and it was wrong because it killed people."
Maybe (spitballing) died of exposure. Parents knew where he was because they took him food early on. But then LE started watching them 24/7 and they could not any longer. Then he was on his own. They finally got worried after a month and took LE right out there only to find a body.
Or he had let them know where he was going, then ended up killing himself.
Or his dad killed him out there, but this seems least likely scenario to me.
