Cause of death revealed for California family found dead on hike near Yosemite

The Mariposa County Sheriff's Office has confirmed the cause of death of a young California family and their dog after an August hike.

Mariposa County Sheriff Jeremy Briese told media Thursday that the deaths of Jonathan Gerrish, 45, Ellen Chung, 30, and their one-year-old daughter Miju โ€” as well as their family dog Oski โ€” was caused by hyperthermia and "probable" dehydration.

"Heat-related deaths are extremely difficult to investigate, and we want to thank you all for being patient with us," Briese said during a press conference.

The sheriff's announcement caps a nearly three-month investigation into the deaths of the young family.

It's possible that the gators ate his arms, legs, and torso area and therefore it only left the skull.

If it did in fact happen that way, then they were lucky they got to the skull before the gators ate that too.

He was missing long enough for the gators to have gotten to his body.
