Israeli scuba diver discovers ancient Crusader sword

Mon, October 18, 2021, 11:32 PM

JERUSALEM (AP) โ€” An Israeli scuba diver has salvaged an ancient sword off the country's Mediterranean coast that experts say dates back to the Crusaders.

Israel's Antiquities Authority said Monday the man was on a weekend dive in northern Israel when he spotted a trove of ancient artifacts that included anchors, pottery and a meter-long (yard-long) sword.

The diver was about 150 meters (170 yards) off the coast in five-meter-deep (5.5-yard-deep) water when he made the discovery.

Experts say the area provided shelter for ancient ships and is home to many archaeological treasures, some dating back 4,000 years. But such discoveries can be elusive because of the constantly shifting sands.

Fearing his discovery might be buried, the diver took the sword ashore and delivered it to government experts, the authority said. The weapon is estimated to be 900 years old.

โ€œIt was found encrusted with marine organisms, but is apparently made of iron,โ€ said Nir Distelfeld, an inspector in the authority's robbery prevention unit. โ€œIt is exciting to encounter such a personal object, taking you 900 years back in time to a different era, with knights, armor and swords.โ€

The sword is to be cleaned and further analyzed, while the diver, identified as Shlomi Katzin, was given a certificate of appreciation for good citizenship.

The Dubai Eye, or Ain Dubai in Arabic, stands 250 metres (820ft) tall above Bluewaters Island near the Dubai Marina. It can carry 1,750 visitors on each rotation which takes just over 30 minutes. Colombian drug lord 'Otoniel' arrested in biggest blow to drug trafficking 'since the fall of Pablo Escobar,' said president

Oct 24 2021

-Drug trafficker Dairo Antonio Usuga, 50, was arrested in a military raid.

-The president has said that this is the "biggest blow to drug trafficking since the fall of Pablo Escobar."

-Usuga is accused of drug trafficking, killing police officers, and sexually abusing children.

Colombia's military has captured drug lord Dairo Antonio Usuga, known as Otoniel, in what has been called "the biggest blow to drug trafficking in the Andean country since the death of Pablo Escobar," according to President Ivan Duque.

Otoniel, 50, has been accused of sending dozens of shipments of cocaine to the United States, killing police officers, recruiting minors, and sexually abusing children, among other crimes, Reuters reports. He imported 73 metric tons of cocaine into the US between 2003-2014, say Miami and Brooklyn indictments, according to The Washington Post.

He was captured during 'operation Osiris' in Colombia's Uraba region, located in Antioquia province, on October 23. He had been living the life of a fugitive for many years and supposedly slept in a different rural location every night, according to The Washington Post.

Otoniel was the leader of the Los Urabeรฑos or the Autodefensas Gaitanistas, which the US Department of Justice website describes as "a heavily armed, extremely violent criminal organization composed of former members of terrorist organizations."

They add that "the organization uses violence and intimidation to control the narcotics trafficking routes, cocaine processing laboratories, speedboat departure points, and clandestine landing strips."

Before he was captured, the Colombian government offered 3 billion pesos (roughly $800,000) for information concerning Otoniel's whereabouts. The US government had offered a $5 million reward for locating him.

"This blow is only comparable to the fall of Pablo Escobar in the 1990s," said President Duque said during a broadcast video message. "

One police officer died during the operation, Duque said.

The take-down operation involved more than 500 members of Colombia's special forces and 22 helicopters, according to defense minister Diego Molano, Sky News reports.

Though government officials have said Otoniel's capture represented the end of the Clan del Golfo, Colombia Risk Analysis director Sergio Guzman has pleaded caution, saying a new leader would surely be waiting to take over.

"It's a big deal because he's the biggest drug kingpin in Colombia," Guzman told Reuters, adding that the capture would not change the fundamentals of drug trafficking. "Otoniel is bound to be replaced."
