Anon, Scripture calls for reaping what has been sown…that is reaping in the flesh. Q is not saying they should not be punished. This verse refers to Perfect Love. The Scripture has to be taken in it's totality, and it also says to mete out justice, but not revenge. Love doesnt mean that people dont suffer the penalty for their actions. In fact, just the opposite, "if your right eye offend you, pluck it out". It's about saving the soul, not the body, even if that means destruction of the body. The body is temporal anyway. The soul lives forever.
Actually, it shows the gravity of the situation. "There are no atheists in foxholes."
