Correct; using a VPN doesn't fix the fuckery. Only statically assigning in HOSTS file helps alleviate the problem. But the problem is being caused by (Chinese? FB? Assets?) corrupting DNS and possibly harvesting data from end users accessing the site. If WH knew that was coming next, they'd have done what was necessary to try and help anons protect themselves with, say, using VPNs.
