@Jack!

Come out to plaaaaaaay!

(soon)

Post-Zuckerberg, tech CEOs under pressure to testify

Leaders of major technology companies are under increasing pressure to testify before Congress as lawmakers sound the alarm about the industry’s data practices and market power.

It’s been a month since Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg appeared in a pair of hearings on Capitol Hill to explain his company’s role in the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The executive largely held his own during the hours of questioning — thanks in no small part to lawmakers’ unfamiliarity with internet policy — but his answers didn’t alleviate concerns about privacy and antitrust.

Now lawmakers are pushing for other major tech CEOs to testify before Congress.

Pakistan…

1st funeral of Santa Fe High School shooting: Pakistani exchange student remembered as 'precious gift'

Family and friends on Sunday remembered 17-year-old Sabika Sheikh as a hard-working and accomplished Pakistani exchange student, during the first of many planned funerals for victims of the Texas high school shooting massacre.

Sheikh, who had been attending classes at Santa Fe High School since last August, said getting accepted into a U.S. program to study was the best thing that ever happened to her in her life. She was scheduled to go home to Pakistan in three weeks, by Eid al-Fitr, a three-day holiday that marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Sabika's funeral took place Sunday afternoon at a mosque in suburban Houston to overflowing crowds. Her immediate family could not be there with her; relatives are in Pakistan, and the Pakistani Consulate has organized to have her remains returned to her family.

Sabika was an honor student.

At the services, she was remembered as a young woman who wanted to be a businesswoman or a diplomat in the Consulate General’s Office.

Gold standard on the way?

Turkey Repatriates All Gold From The US In Attempt To Ditch The Dollar

After Venezuela, Germany, Austria and the Netherlands prudently repatriated a substantial portion (if not all) of their physical gold held at the NY Fed or other western central banks in recent years, one month ago Turkey announced that it too has decided to repatriate its gold stored in the US Federal Reserve and deliver it to the Istanbul Stock Exchange, according to reports in Turkey's Yeni Safak. As we reported at the time, it wouldn't be the first time Turkey has asked the NY Fed to ship the country's gold back: in recent years, Turkey repatriated 220 tons of gold from abroad, of which 28.7 tons was brought back from the US last year.

And now, according to a report by the Swiss Schweiz am Wochenende, the repatriation is complete with the Turkish central bank withdrawing all of its gold reserves from the U.S. due to the "tense political situation." However, in a strange twist, instead of moving the physical gold to Istanbul as the Turkish press reported in April, the Swiss newspaper notes that around 19 tons of Turkish gold is now stored at the Basel-based Bank for International Settlements.

It was not immediately clear why Turkey would shift its gold from the NY Fed to the BIS, whose historical "gold rehypothecation" tendencies have been well documented over the years.

According to the latest IMF data, Turkey’s total gold reserves are estimated at 596 tons in May, up 5 tons since April, and worth just under $23 billion, rising 40% over the past year. This makes Ankara the 11th largest gold holder, behind the Netherlands and ahead of India.

He's right you know…

NRA boss Oliver North blames Ritalin, ‘culture of violence’ for school shootings

Incoming NRA President Oliver North tried to blame the rash of school shootings across the U.S., including the massacre at a Texas high school Friday, on video games and ADHD medication instead of access to firearms.

The gun lobby's newest spokesman said the wave of killings were carried out by "young boys" who "have been on Ritalin since they were in kindergarten."

"I am certainly not a doctor, I'm a Marine, but I can see those kinds of things happening," North said in an interview on "Fox News Sunday."

Friday's rampage was among the deadliest this year, along with the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre that left 17 dead in Parkland, Fla. three months ago.

But North said the shooters were "drugged in many cases."

"Nearly all of these perpetrators are male, and they're young teenagers in most cases, and they've come through a culture where violence is commonplace," he said. "All we need to do is turn on a TV, go to a movie."

De Blasio to tell NYPD to stop arresting New Yorkers for smoking pot in public

Mayor de Blasio will tell the NYPD to stop arresting people for public pot smoking — and launch a new group to officially prepare the city for the outright legalization of marijuana in New York

De Blasio, who has long opposed making recreational pot legal, now says he thinks legalization is inevitable and is creating an official task force to get ready for the day when that happens and implement the new law.

While pot remains illegal, Hizzoner will direct the NYPD to give summonses to people they catch smoking in public instead of arresting them, his aides said Sunday.

That policy change will be part of a 30-day review the mayor announced last week to address the massive racial disparity in marijuana arrests.

So anyone want to bet they'll do what CA has done to public schools in the past few decades - just lower the bar. Woohoo!

A bar too high? Pass rate plummets to record low for California lawyer exam

Only a quarter of applicants passed the California bar exam in its most recent sitting, the State Bar of California announced this week, a record low for the test that lawyers must successfully complete to practice in the state.

The pass rate for the February exam sank to just 27.3 percent, about 7 percentage points lower than last year and the first time since 1986 that it has fallen below 30 percent. The previous low, according to a summary of results since 1951, came in the spring of 1983, when 27.7 percent of applicants passed.

In a statement Friday, executive director Leah T. Wilson said the State Bar recently launched an intervention program to "improve performance on the bar exam" and "better understand the downward trend of the bar exam pass rates." It is also preparing to complete a study about the needs of entry-level lawyers, in order to evaluate the exam standards.

"Over the long term, we need to be sure that we are testing for the skills and content that new attorneys need, and that we are doing so in the right format," Wilson said.
