Vice President Joe Biden sought Wednesday to reassure Turkey that the United States has its back, less than two months after a failed military coup that Ankara has blamed on a 75-year-old Muslim cleric living in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania.

โ€œI can understand how some of your countrymen feel the world didnโ€™t respond to their existential crisis rapidly enough or with the appropriate amount of solidarity and empathy,โ€ Biden said following a two-and-a-half hour meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. โ€œThatโ€™s why I wanted to be personally here and was asked by the President to personally represent him to tell you and your colleagues and countrymen how very, very sorry I amโ€ about what the nation experienced.
