The war is against families and nation states. They nurture their young and protect and promote talented individuals.

Monasteries, cloisters. abbeys, etc., for example, were places where talented thinkers were sequestered and provided for. Oxford University, as an example, is a collection of these types of facilities, called colleges there.

The enemy are tribesmen, nomad cultures in which intellectually talented individuals were at a disadvantage, IOW least fit to survive in an existence battle. When you see this demographic pouring over the border, you can be pretty safe to assume it might be to sack the nation state.
