#OTD 1943, USS Borie rammed U-405 and became stuck on the sub's deck. Crews then engaged in a fierce fight at close range. Attacking with small arms and flare guns, the Americans also hurled knives and 4" shell casings at the Germans. U-405 sank and the Borie had to be scuttled.
