Today in 1957, Soviet space dog Laika became the first animal to orbit the Earth in Sputnik 2. Born a stray mongrel on the streets of Moscow, Laika proved that living creatures could survive the launch into outer space. Sputnik 2 had never intended to return to Earth, and Laika died of overheating on her fourth orbit of the planet. She appears on the Monument to the Conquerors of Space in Moscow.
