“Invisible Toxic Cocktail” in Tap Water Across US Due to “Regulatory Capture”: Analysis
Millions of people throughout the United States “are unwittingly drinking water that includes an invisible toxic cocktail made up of contaminants linked to cancer, brain damage, and other serious health harms,” according to the Environmental Working Group, which updated its nationwide Tap Water Database on Wednesday.
“EWG’s Tap Water Database offers a panoramic view of what drinking water quality looks like when the federal office meant to protect our water is in an advanced stage of regulatory capture,” Environmental Working Group (EWG) president Ken Cook said in a statement.
“The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Groundwater and Drinking Water has demonstrated for decades that it is utterly incapable of standing up to pressure from water utilities and polluters to protect human health from the dozens of toxic contaminants in America’s drinking water,” said Cook.
EWG’s unique database—assembled over the course of multiple years by researchers who collected and analyzed test data from nearly 50,000 water systems in the U.S.—reveals “widespread contamination from toxic substances such as arsenic, lead, and the ‘forever chemicals’ known as PFAS in the drinking water of tens of millions of households in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.”
The “comprehensive consumer tool” enables individuals to “enter a ZIP code into the database and see a report of the type and amount of toxic chemicals detected in that location’s drinking water. They can also see safety assessments developed by EWG scientists about the adverse health effects associated with exposure to those contaminants.”
EWG stressed that its database “underscores the need for stricter federal water quality standards and a massive injection of funding for badly needed water infrastructure improvements across the country.”
“The U.S. tap water system,” EWG added, “is plagued by antiquated infrastructure and rampant pollution of source water, while out-of-date EPA regulations, often relying on archaic science, allow unsafe levels of toxic chemicals in drinking water.”
Since Congress passed the Safe Drinking Water Act in 1974, the EPA has established maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for more than 90 contaminants.
While the water coming out of most taps across the U.S. is deemed legal by the EPA— whose MCLs determine a pollutant’s upper limit—”it is hardly safe,” according to the EWG, which added that “federal oversight of drinking water has been failing for years.”
“The EPA has become very good at constantly reassuring the public that all is well with the water coming out of their taps,” said Cook. “That message is music to the ears of polluters who’ve fouled source waters and water utilities wary of treatment and infrastructure costs. But it’s just not true—and the EPA’s own scientists know it.”

DeSantis Introduces Election Integrity Bills to Go Before Legislature in Special Session
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Nov. 3 asked legislators in his state to take on several election integrity measures when they meet for a special session later this month.
The Republican governor had initially called for the special session of the Florida Legislature to strengthen the state’s ability to block vaccine and school mask mandates.
Speaking to an enthusiastic crowd in West Palm Beach on Wednesday, he is asked legislators to add four election integrity measures to the priorities for the special legislative session on Nov. 15-19.
DeSantis wants to create an Office of Election Crimes and Security to investigate allegations of violations of Florida’s elections laws. The proposal would make that the largest election security office in the nation, with 25 sworn law enforcement officers and additional investigators. The office would be solely dedicated to investigating and prosecuting election crimes.
The governor wants to elevate the crime of ballot harvesting from a misdemeanor to a third-degree felony. Ballot harvesting, which is legal in some states, involves a coordinated effort to collect and drop off absentee ballots.
“The first person who gets caught—no one’s going want to do it again after that,” DeSantis said.
Another proposal would require timelines for county supervisors of elections to clean up voter rolls, removing voters who have died, moved, or become ineligible for some other reason.
The governor is also calling for a law to “crack down on haphazard and unsecure” drop-box locations.
The proposal asks for each drop box to have a person supervising it and to have camera surveillance. DeSantis wants drop boxes removed immediately after voting ends, so they can be taken directly to a supervised area for counting.
“I don’t even think there should be drop boxes,” the governor said.
Now, if people see an election-related problem, such as someone “with a stack of 50 ballots,” they will have an office to call, and that will be investigated, he added.
In the special legislative session, the governor also has called for action to ban private employer vaccine mandates, strengthen the state’s Parents’ Bill of Rights, disqualify employers mandating vaccinations from having liability protection, allow those harmed by vaccinations to sue employers, and opt out of federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulation.

The project was developed by the company’s co-founder Ankan Linden who said it was a promotion to show people how to eat plant-based.
“We developed this burger in no time as soon as we knew what taste and texture we were after. This is our ultimate and weird way of showing that it’s possible to eat both plant-based and sustainable,” he said.
His colleague, Oumph! Global brand lead Henrik Akerman added: “For us, the most human way of having a burger is a plant-based one.”
